HOMECOMING MUMS

The Westside Band Boosters is once again making Homecoming Mums for Westside students. These beautiful Homecoming Mums are custom made by band parents and come in three sizes: 15" (garter), 24" (friendship), and 36" in length.

Freshmen and Sophomore mums are made with the school colors - black and blue.

Juniors and Seniors are distinct and special - Junior mums are silver and white; Senior mums are gold and white.

A table will be set up in the Commons during lunch periods. Stop by during lunch to get more information, to pick up an order form or to turn in your order. Click here for the senior form and here for the underclassman form.

Don't delay, get your order in early! The last day to order is October 24.
THE PSAT IS COMING!

The PSAT will be administered at Westside on Wednesday, October 15, in homerooms. All students received an information booklet (and a practice test!) during homeroom the first week of school.

The District pays the fee for all 9th and 10th grade students to take the PSAT. Juniors need to pay the $14 ($7 if on free or reduced lunch) in A205.

Why the PSAT?

Questions? Contact Mrs. Matlock in A205, or email her at smatlock@houstonisd.org

PTO MEETING

All are welcome to attend the PTO Meeting on Tuesday, October 7, from 7-8:30 p.m., in the school Library. We will discuss upcoming plans and activities, and Principal Peggi Stewart will give an update and take your questions. Refreshments will be served and we will have a couple of give-aways at the end of the meeting. Bring a friend and get in the loop on what is happening at WHS.

URBAN AG STUDENTS SPRUCE UP CAMPUS GROUNDS

Although HISD sends out a grounds crew a few times a month, the extent of what they do is limited. Thanks to some Urban Agriculture students, the Westside grounds have never looked better. Just before Parent Teacher Night, these students pulled weeds, trimmed dead branches, and pruned bushes.

PRINCIPAL'S FOCUS: REPORT CARDS

Report Cards for the first grading cycle will be issued to students on October 10. Please take time to your student's grades. Involvement in your high schooler's schoolwork is extremely important.

In addition to report cards, Parent Student Connect (PSC) allows registered users (i.e., parents and students) to log in to access a variety of student information, see class assignments and school calendars, and even communicate electronically with teachers. Users can also choose to have an e-mail or text message sent if a child's grades drop below a selected average or is absent or tardy to class.

Information that PSC provides access to includes:

  • Period and Daily Attendance
  • Class Schedules and Assignments
  • Progress Reports
  • Report Cards
  • Standardized Test Results (TAKS by subject area)
  • Curriculum Resources
  • Parent and Student Resources
To get started, log in at www.houstonisd.org/psc or register at www.houstonisd.org/pscregister
COLLEGE NIGHT

Westside is hosting its annual College Night on Thursday, October 9, from 6-8 p.m., in the Commons.

Close to 75 colleges from around the country and Mexico will be in attendance, as well as Plumbers' Apprentice Union, HPD, Cambridge Financial, US Army, and Marines.

There will be an opportunity to sign up for Naviance that evening.  There will also be an information booth for First Generation College Students.

PRIDE GOLF TOURNAMENT

The 4th annual open invitation golf tournament for The Westside Pride Dance Team will be held Saturday, October 18, 2014 at The Presidents Course at Bear Creek Golf World.

CHOICES CORNER: RELATIONSHIPS

Relationships are one of the most complicated, exciting, confusing and tricky parts of life, especially for a teenager. Teenage relationships can have such high highs and low lows and can often times feel like a roller-coaster. However, it is very important that teenagers feel as if they can get off of this roller-coaster whenever they need to or want to and that they are in control. We want our teens to decide to be in a relationship instead of just sliding into it without any thought.

It is very important to have open communication with your teens about relationships of all kinds. Did you know that 90% of parents are unaware of physical or sexual abuse occurring in their teen's relationships? That is a shocking statistic and one that we need to work to dramatically decrease.

The Choices topic for October will be focused on relationships. Throughout the month, we will be discussing healthy and unhealthy relationships, dating safety and more. For parents: on Thursday, October 9, we will have a "Choices Chat" about "Teen Relationship Realities" in the library from 6:15 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. For students: I am providing a two part Dating Safety Seminar on October 16,and 23, in S100 starting at 8 a.m., before late start Thursday. Students can receive credit appeal and community service hours for attending.

Please see the Choices webpage for more information.
