SENIOR RANKS

The official preliminary ranking for seniors will be released on Wednesday, October 1.  Students may come to the Registrar's Office, A116, before school, during their lunch or after school (only), to receive an unofficial copy of their transcript and their ranking.

THE PSAT IS COMING!

The PSAT will be administered at Westside on Wednesday, October 15, in homerooms. All students received an information booklet (and a practice test!) during homeroom the first week of school.

The District pays the fee for all 9th and 10th grade students to take the PSAT. Juniors need to pay the $14 ($7 if on free or reduced lunch) in A205.

Why the PSAT?

Questions? Contact Mrs. Matlock in A205, or email her at smatlock@houstonisd.org

PE STUDENTS GET INSIGHT AND A WORKOUT
Westside's Physical Education Department welcomed guest speaker Nester Perez on Thursday, September 18. Nester is a 28 year old owner of a Cross Fit style gym in the Heights named "Freestyle Conditioning."

He has competed in 6 cross fit event's placing top three in all six. He attended college at Sam Houston State University and is a certified personal trainer, Olympic lifting coach, and cross fit coach. His gym's website is freestyleconditioning.com.

He gave the kids great incite on owning their own business, living a healthy lifestyle, and chasing their dreams and afterwards, wore them out in a 12 minute, bodyweight, cross fit workout.
GET INVOLVED: HISD STUDENT CONGRESS
A new student led group has been formed to bring a voice to all HISD students. The focus of this group is bring up student issues and concerns to help make HISD even better for students.

What does this mean for Westside? Currently, we are forming the group from Westside, so we are looking for interested students to become part of the congress and serve on various committees. All grade levels are welcome to join.

How do you get involved? There will be a meeting after school, next Monday, October 6, in room S244.  If you can't make the meeting or have specific questions, email our sponsor, Ms. Garrett at SGARRET3@houstonisd.org.

Ms. Garrett attended the monthly meeting this past Saturday, as the HISD Student Congress adopted a constitution. Check out the website at hisdstudentcongress.org/. Sign up and see all of the committees.
PRINCIPAL'S FOCUS: SHOWERED WITH SUPPLIES

The Supply Shower for Westside's Teachers was a big success thanks to our wonderful parents. Another thank you goes to the excellent help from our National Honor Society's students.

All of Westside's teachers will be receiving items from the shower. Also, many of the teachers who sent in wish lists had their wishes fulfilled. We really appreciate the support that was shown for our teachers.

PRIDE WELCOMES NEW AND FUTURE MEMBERS

Last week, Westside's Pride welcomed their newest members with Big Sissy Day! The big sisters chose outfits for their little sisters to wear as they showed their spirit for being the newest members part Westside's dance team.

Saturday night, Pride hosted their annual Dance with Pride Night at Barnett Stadium as many kids in the community came out to "Dance with Pride" during halftime at Westside's football game. Below is a picture of everybody who participated. There should be a few future Pride members who took to the field.

HOMECOMING MUMS

We're almost into October and you know what that means...Homecoming!

The Westside Band Boosters is once again making Homecoming Mums for Westside students. These beautiful Homecoming Mums are custom made by band parents and come in three sizes: 15" (garter), 24" (friendship), and 36" in length.

Freshmen and Sophomore mums are made with the school colors - black and blue.

Juniors and Seniors are distinct and special - Junior mums are silver and white; Senior mums are gold and white.

A table will be set up in the Commons during lunch periods starting on October 1. Stop by during lunch to get more information, to pick up an order form or to turn in your order. Don't delay, get your order in early!
CHOICES CORNER: BE AN UPSTANDER

As September is coming to a close, so is our Choices topic of the month which is bullying awareness. We went over a lot of heavy topics this month and had some tough conversations. Therefore, I want to end this month on a positive note and talk about what it means to be an upstander. The difference between a bystander and an upstander is very important. A bystander is someone who watches bullying occur or hears about it and does nothing to stop it. On the other hand, an upstander is someone who stands up to the bully and says "no" to bullying.

The bystander role in a bullying situation is a very dangerous one. As Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." It is that silence that we need to eliminate. Whether it is your child, another student, a fellow parent, a teacher, or a friend, it is up to us to empower those around us to stand up to the bully and make sure the behavior will not continue. It is important to remember: the bully will only do what the bystander allows. So ask yourself: "What can I do today to become an Upstander?"
