THE PSAT IS COMING!

The PSAT will be administered at Westside on Wednesday, October 15, in homerooms. All students received an information booklet (and a practice test!) during homeroom the first week of school.

The District pays the fee for all 9th and 10th grade students to take the PSAT. Juniors need to pay the $14 ($7 if on free or reduced lunch) in A205.

Why the PSAT?

Questions? Contact Mrs. Matlock in A205, or email her at smatlock@houstonisd.org

WESTSIDE WELCOMES NO MUSIC TEACHERS
If you have been to a Westside varsity football game over the past few weeks, then you've noticed the halftime show has a new sound and spectacular movements. This is directly related to the three new music teachers at Westside. Let's meet them!

Mr. Joey Brunson is in his eighth year of teaching, and his first year in HISD. Joey is the Director of Bands at Westside. His responsibilities include directing the Westside Wolf Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Orchestra, Concert Band, and overseeing the entire band program. Prior to this position, he was the Director of Bands at Jacksonville ISD. His bands have received the UIL Sweepstakes award, numerous first division UIL ratings and competed in the Area Marching Contest. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. His professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Bandmasters Association. He lives in Katy with his beautiful wife and daughter. He enjoys playing jazz piano, video games, reading, and traveling.

Mr. Jerry Gonzalez is in his sixth year of teaching in Texas public schools. He is currently serving as Assistant Band Director at Westside where his responsibilities include teaching the Westside Wolf Marching Band, Symphonic Winds, Jazz Combo/Jazz Band, as well as teaching AP Music Theory. He holds both a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. While at SFASU, he performed in various ensembles including the Lumberjack Marching Band, the Wind Ensemble, and the Swingin' Axes Jazz Band where he shared a stage with Mike Vax (Stan Kenton Orchestra), Mike Williams (Count Basie Orchestra), and Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band). His professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Lambda, and the International Trumpet Guild. He likes reading, video games, zombies, and naps.

Mr. Jeremiah Salisbury is in his third year of professional
teaching and first year at Westside. He currently holds the position of Percussion Director of Westside High School and West Briar Middle School. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. Throughout his collegiate career, he had the opportunity to perform with various ensembles across the country including the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, the National Collegiate Wind Ensemble, and Tyler Junior College. Prior to coming to Houston, Jeremiah was the assistant band director at Jacksonville High School in Jacksonville, Texas. While in the East Texas area, he also assisted other programs in the area including Robert E. Lee High School and Tyler Junior College. When he is not teaching, he enjoys video games and hiking.
PRINCIPAL'S FOCUS: LOCKDOWN DRILL

null

Safety is a priority at Westside High School. In accordance with that priority, we will be conducting a lockdown drill on Westside's campus this Thursday, September 25, at approximately 2 p.m.

Lockdown drills are means of practicing preparedness in the event of an intruder or criminal act. An announcement will be given that the building is going into immediate lockdown mode.

At that point, all students and faculty present at the time of the drill go to the nearest room and lock all doors and windows. Our goal is to secure all students within 30 seconds or sooner. Everyone will remain still and quiet until the "all clear" announcement has been made.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns through the main office at 281-920-8000.

COOKING UP SUCCESS

Culinary Arts Program students Barrosa Boykin, Santiago Castaneda, and Andrew Winkle were recognized at the HISD Board Meeting on Thursday, September 11, for their award winning accomplishments during HISD's Cooking up Change competition last April. The competition challenged students to create a delicious, nutritious school lunch that peers will enjoy while working under the constraints schools face daily. Congratulations to Barrosa, Andrew, and Santiago.  Thank you for making us all Wolf Proud!

STUDENTS SIGN PLEDGE

After last week's Choices Corner topic on 'Trolling', Westside students took time to show their resolve by pledging 'Not to be Mean Behind the Screen', by signing a huge banner, during lunch.

CHOICES CORNER: NATIONAL FAMILY DAY

Today is National Family Day! Family Day is a nationwide initiative created by CASAColumbia to promote the importance of parental and family engagement.  The movement also discusses the importance of parental engagement as a key way to help prevent high risk behavior in adolescents.  Family Day stresses how important it is to connect with your kids at various times throughout the day while you are driving them to school, helping them with their homework, or enjoying a family dinner.   These valuable moments foster an environment of open communication and closeness.

The website asks that parents sign a pledge to become a "STAR".  "S" is for spending time with your teens, "T" is for talking to them about their friends, interests and the dangers of nicotine, alcohol and other drugs, "A" is for answering their questions and listening to what they say, and "R" is for recognizing that you have the power to help keep your teens substance free.  I encourage you to sign this pledge and then show it to your teen; that will show them that you are invested in keeping them happy, healthy and safe.
