PRINCIPAL'S RECEPTION RECAP

Parents and community members were treated to a showcase of the talent and dedication of Westside's students and staff at the Principal's Reception, which was hosted by the PTO, last Thursday evening.
Guests arrived to a social hour featuring culinary creations by the Outback Café Culinary Program. The Commons was transformed into a gallery of student work with an extensive exhibit from the Visual Arts Department, and displays from Health Sciences, WEGA, and Computer Programming. Music by the WHS Symphonic Strings provided the perfect backdrop for the reception.

The program included guest speaker Laurie Bricker, our former HISD District VI Trustee, who spoke about the founding of Westside and the integral role of the community in supporting the school. Principal Peggi Stewart shared an overview of our school today, and insights into changes on the horizon, including the rollout of the Power Up Program and new offerings associated with HB5, the Futures Academy, and the AP Capstone Program.

The audience was entertained by Inertia Dance Company and T-Pro's Improv team. The evening culminated with the unveiling of the latest addition to our school's series of bronze plaques. PTO President Barbara Nassab presented the newest plaque honoring our Principal, Ms. Peggi Stewart.

DANCE THE DREAM
The Inertia Dance company has a unique opportunity to be part of the Dance the Dream Houston program, this weekend.

Dance the Dream Houston brings the city together to celebrate and live the values and goals of the "I Have a Dream" speech. The event is part of the worldwide Dance the Dream tribute, hosted by over 30 cities, including London, Paris, Prague, New York, Beirut, Kabul, Jerusalem, Singapore, Mumbai, Dublin, Boston, Chicago, Birmingham, and Seattle.

If you have a chance to see Inertia perform in this important program, head to Discovery Green this Sunday, May 18, 2014, from 1-3 p.m.
COLLEGE SIGNING

Senior Shelby Steward will be playing volleyball for Dillard University in the fall. The memorable event was celebrated with friends, family, coaches, and teachers. After the signing, Shelby cut into a big cake and shared with everybody.

Pictured above, Coach Gillespie drops an inside joke as he speaks about Shelby. Shelby always has a smile to share, so New Orleans will shine a little brighter when she arrives.
COLOR GUARD AUDITIONS

Do you have dance experience or enjoy dancing? Do you want to be a part of a group that competes and has fun? Then come out and audition for the Westside Color Guard! We will teach you everything you need to know to join this new group!

The camp and auditions will be held in the Commons Monday through Friday, May 19-23 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Stop by the main office to pick-up a packet with all the details!
CHOICES CORNER: GOOD MOTHERS

In honor of Mother's Day yesterday, I wanted to address an article that I read this past weekend titled "Good Mothers Provide Foundations for Future" (click here for the article). The author, Deborah Jacobvitz, reflects on the important and various roles that mothers play in their children's lives. The role of mother is one that changes constantly throughout the different stages of life, but remains extremely important as children grow into adulthood. Stronger mother-child relationships often predict better parenting skills when their children grow up and have kids of their own.

One important role mothers have is providing emotional care. That emotional bond that is formed in early childhood is critically important transitioning into adulthood. Furthermore, the quality of that bond is what is transmitted to the next generation. So on this Mother's Day, I wanted to honor the significant role that mothers play. They wear so many hats and often times never have a second to themselves because they give so much of themselves to others. If you didn't do it yesterday, take a moment today to thank the instrumental adults you had growing up; whether it was a mother, father, grandmother, teacher or neighbor, don't let another second go by without letting them know how much you appreciate them.

We value your feedback!
