HOST AN
EXCHANGE STUDENT

Hosting a foreign exchange student is just like having your own child attend Westside. These students have become a part of the fabric of Westside through participation in academics, athletics, and clubs & organizations. The friendships they have developed have further enriched their stay in the United States.  Everybody involved will tell you that it is truly the experience of a lifetime, for both the host families and exchange students.

If you are interested in hosting, or have questions about hosting, an exchange student for the 2014-2015 school year, please contact Erik Ostergren at eostergr@houstonisd.org or call 281-920-8075.

This year, Westside is fortunate to have eight wonderful exchange students. We have three students who hail from Germany; the remaining students come from an eclectic mixture of countries: Belgium, Romania, Austria, China and Canada.

STRESS RELIEF FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS

The last day of school before Spring Break brought about the annual dodgeball challenge, The Game of Throws, pitting students against teachers. After just a few years, it has become a tradition that students and teachers look forward to. Last year's reigning champions were the teachers, led by computer science teacher and head volleyball coach, Mr. King.

There were three matches pitting three different teacher teams against three different student teams. This year's championship match featured the defending champions, Mr. King and his Court of Teachers, and the student team, Trilluminati. The students had better aim as the Trilluminati dethroned the King and his Court. Here are a few pics from the matches.

CHOICES CORNER: THANKS!

I want to extend a huge thank you to Mike and Lindsey and the crew at the new Chick-Fil-A at Briar Forest and Eldridge Parkway. They generously donated a large tray of Chick-n-Minis and a large tray of Cinnamon Clusters for the second session of the Choices' bullying seminar, the "Upstander Project" on March 13. The students were so excited and the food was delicious!

This would not have been possible without the help of one of our own Westside moms, Mrs. Jane Miller, who has now brought breakfast for three different Choices events. Although this is the Choices program's first year at Westside, we have already experienced the generosity and support of so many people in the school and out in the community. Thank you!

This Thursday, March 27, will be the last "Upstander Project" session. We will finish the "Bully" documentary, learn more about bullying vs conflict, and brainstorm ways to make more students upstanders at Westside.

We value your feedback!
