WAIT...THAT'S A WOLF PRAIRIE?
By: Hayley Justice

At some point during our time at Westside, we have all walked past that mass of vegetation located at the back of the school south of the baseball fields; many have wondered why Westside has not converted that vast space into more sporting facilities. Well, that patch of land is, in fact, not a pit of weeds, but rather a center for flourishing biodiversity - something your fellow Environmental Science students can now vouch for.

Throughout this semester, Ms. Klein's APES (Advanced Placement Environmental Science) classes have been venturing out to Wolf Prairie to revitalize the once thriving prairie ecosystem that once stretched 9 million acres from the central coast of Louisiana to the central coast of Texas.

With the help of the Katy Prairie Conservancy, Westside has taken the initiative for the last three years to rekindle this ecosystem as it offers many vital functions in our environment; some of these benefits include habitat conservation, erosion reduction, as well as air and water purification.

Each month, students participate in planting native species, such as big and little bluestem, as well as gulf coastal muhley, while removing exotic ones, such as balloon vine and sump weed, in order to restore the natural elements of the prairie. This is done in hopes to reintroduce species that once resided amongst the tall grasses and plant life.

One species that APES students are very familiar with is the monarch butterfly. Westside is part of an active conservation project called the Kansas State Monarch Watch program to tag and release monarchs to ensure their safe flight to Mexico during the colder months.

So, if you see any students armed with shovels, bug spray, or nets hovering around the prairie, don't worry, their just doing their job as wildlife conservationists!

STUDENTS REUNITE
This past July, an adventurous Westside group had the opportunity to participate in the Kakehashi project, which took two faculty members and twelve students to Japan. Last week, our group reunited with several of their Japanese counterparts at Rice University. It was the Japanese students' turn to visit and experience another culture.

While the Westside group was in Japan, the students spent 10 days touring the country to experience culture, advanced technologies, the historical heritage, and natural environment unique to Japan. They also had exchange with Japanese students at the Kobe City College of Technology.
They visited various classrooms to learn how students learn English, Math, Science, and other activities such as Kendo (Japanese art of fencing) and Kyudo (Japanese art of archery).
Japanese students demonstrated chemical magic using Liquid Nitrogen. In the Mechanical Labs and Factory, they provided a hover-craft riding trial. It encouraged the Westside students to learn more about Science.

In addition to the school visit, Westside students had an opportunity to stay 2 nights with a Japanese host family to immerse themselves in local customs. Even though they spent only 10 days in Japan, the students have a deep appreciation in Japanese language and culture.
The Kakehasi Project successfully builds the bridge between two cultures and creates more interest in the Japanese program for future Westside students. This is just one of the great opportunities available through the Japanese course.

CHOICES CORNER: TRAINING YOUR TEEN

Happy Monday Westside! I hope everyone had a nice weekend. Next Tuesday, February 4, the WHS PTO will be offering a special dual-session of the February meeting.

There will be a morning session at 8:00 a.m., and an evening session at 7:00 p.m. I will be presenting "Training Your Teen: A Chapter from the Owner's Manual You Wish Came with Your Teen" that will focus on behavior modification, your teen's brain, and practical tips you can use right away.

The morning session will be held in S100 and will start off with a coffee reception at 8:00 a.m. followed by the presentation at 8:30 a.m. The evening session will be held in the Library, with refreshments at 7:00 p.m. and the presentation at 7:30 p.m. We are really excited for this event and we hope you will come and bring a friend!

Everyone is welcome and we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to meet other parents who are facing the challenges of raising a teen, and to get some tips and advice on parenting. Hope to see you there!
