Teachers new to Westside have been meeting each week to support each others' transition into our building.
They have been meeting over lunch and would like to acknowledge Chik-Fil-A, Chang's Chinese Restaurant, and Double Dave's Pizza for supporting our new teachers.
Please support our local restaurants!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: MICHAEL FREEMAN

What sets us apart from our peers? Our experiences and dreams are things that definitely create separation. Sharing his voice, leading others, accepting challenges, showing grit--this is Michael Freeman. Michael hopes his experiences land him at his dream university, Stanford.
Through his experience this summer with EMERGE HISD, Michael learned that essay writing is a significant skill to possess. This point comes across immediately as he must write a college essay for almost every college he applies to. Through the college essay, the admissions team decides what sets one high-achieving student apart from another. When Michael writes his college essays to such schools as Yale, Stanford, Harvard, and Duke, he thinks of how he wants each reader to understand his intellectual curiosity.
One of Michael's greatest accomplishments at Westside has been his involvement in One Thing. Like his selection for EMERGE, Michael was asked to join a team of other Westside students who are interested in how to positively impact what happens in the classroom. Motivated by the opportunity to show appreciation for effective teaching, while giving an outlet for the student voice, Michael hopes that his work with the One Thing team will make a positive change for all Westside students and leave a legacy of best practices regarding the relationships between teachers and students.
On top of his experience with EMERGE this summer, Michael has also been involved in orchestra and the Energy Institute at Westside High School (also known as Westside Engineering and Geosciences Academy-WEGA). All of his unique experiences at Westside make Stanford a real possibility for Michael Freeman.

ENERGY INSTITUTE BRINGS HOME SOME CASH

The Energy Institute at Westside High School, also known as the Westside Engineering and Geosciences Academy (WEGA), attended the annual oil simulation competition known as PetroChallenge where several of our students left with their pockets filled with money.
The PetroChallenge pitted our WEGA sophomores against the other Energy Institutes around Houston and Ft. Worth in a multifaceted competition. The two-day, interactive, technological competition was held on the Alief campus of Houston Community College, September 19 and 20.
Ethan Herrera, Ethan Khwaja, and Emil Bakiyev were the top prize winners for Westside. Although some brought won cash prizes, every student came back a winner as students learned about the upstream side of the oil and gas industry.

CHOICES CORNER: NATIONAL FAMILY DAY

Today is National Family Day! Family Day is a nationwide initiative created by CASAColumbia to promote the importance of parental and family engagement. The movement also discusses the importance of parental engagement as a key way to help prevent high risk behavior in adolescents. Family Day stresses how important it is to connect with your kids at various times throughout the day while you are driving them to school, helping them with their homework, or enjoying a family dinner. These valuable moments foster an environment of open communication and closeness.
