PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT: CHOICES

Choices is a prevention and counseling program at Westside High School sponsored through The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston. The mission is to reduce high-risk behavior through a comprehensive education and counseling program involving members of the school community including students, parents, and faculty. Through working together for an in-depth understanding of the particular needs and issues of the school's community, the partnership will focus on reducing risk by increasing the use of executive function skills.
Throughout the year, Choices will sponsor an educational series about 15 different high risk behaviors. Students, faculty, and parents will learn why people engage in these behaviors and how to help when these behaviors result in negative consequences.
Choices will reach out to students and parents in an effort to educate and support. We will also increase the Westside facultys' knowledge and skills in dealing with these high-risk behaviors. Our goal is to reduce stigma and increase empathy within the community.
The Choices program counselor for Westside is Meredith Parsley, who is a licensed Master Social Worker. She is an employee of The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston. Her office on campus is room S241, where she can provide counseling services to Westside students and their families. Counseling through Choices is private and confidential.
Meredith will also implement the Choices curriculum throughout the year. This will include various groups, speakers, presentations, and other exciting events in an effort to educate the Westside community about-high risk behaviors. Watch for emails and web-page updates from Meredith regarding upcoming Choices events. Also, you can email Meredith anytime with confidential questions at [email protected].

BUBBLED IN: PSAT TESTING

It is August and we already have testing to talk about. The PSAT will be administered on campus for all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. This Friday during homeroom, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will receive the booklet pictured below. Parents should expect to get this Friday, after school.
The test will be given during regular school hours on October 16.
A grant that HISD acquired will pay for all sophomore and freshman PSAT tests.
Juniors will be required to pay $14 ($7 for those on free/reduced lunch) prior to taking the PSAT. Payment must be cash or money order and can be paid in The College Room, A205, during lunch, before school, and immediately after school.

PTO: GET INVOLVED

The Westside PTO would like to welcome all new and returning parents to join us to help make a positive impact on our school and students. The PTO provides volunteer support to many activities each year and we support the school with funds for programs and special purchases not covered by the school's operating budget. There are four easy ways to get involved right away:
1. Join the PTO! See the membership form in your First Day Packet or go our Webstore to join online.
2. Sign up to volunteer! Send back the VIPs form in your First Day Packet or go to www.westsidepto.org to print out a form or follow this link to get instructions about doing it online: VIPS.
3. Make a donation to "Support Westside Success"! This is our most important fundraiser of the year and 100% of proceeds go to school improvements and support. Send back the donation form in your First Day Packet, or go to our Webstore to donate online.
4. Attend our first PTO Meeting of the year on September 3, at 7 p.m., in the Westside library. We will hear an update on the new school year from Principal Stewart, and also get a special parent preview of Westside's new "Choices" program.
