Thank You Westside Staff Members

The Westside High School Community wants to send a big thank you to all the employees at Westside High School. We appreciate all the hard work and dedication each one of you show in helping to make Westside a great school. From the dedicated custodial staff and cafeteria workers to the support staff, teachers, administrators and principal, without all of you, Westside would not function.

This week teachers will enjoy USB drive bracelets, tasty treats from Westside's culinary program, and breakfast from the PTO; goodies from the One Thing Committee; and some tantalizing tacos from a taco truck on Tuesday! Thanks to everyone who contributed to make this a special week for our teachers!

Suit Up for Teacher of the Year Day!

This Wednesday, May 1st, Westside High School celebrates our Teacher of the Year Peter Anderson-Kelly and New Teacher of the Year, Kaitlin Kindred! WHY I LOVE WESTSIDE

EAST ONE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: ALIXIE CHARLES

when asked about her decision to attend Westside, Alixie Charles explained, "I chose Westside instead of Carnegie because of the social opportunities. I'm really a social butterfly and knew I wanted to join a bunch of clubs and be active in the community." Calling Alixie an involved student is a severe understatement. She is on Pride, Student Council, National Honor Society, Best Buddies, and the Black Student Union. As if that wasn't enough, she is also the president of the Business Professionals of America and an officer for DECA.

Next year Alixie will be attending the University of Texas-San Antonio where she received a scholarship. Naturally, she chose business marketing as her major because of her comfort around people. "I'm really excited to be involved with the marketing program at UTSA. I just love getting to know people and what they like and what their interests are. Of course that's what business marketing is all about."

When Alixie was asked about her favorite Westside moment she really struggled for an answer. "I don't know how to pick! I got the chance to do so many fun things and had a ton of opportunities. You really don't realize how much you did until you step back and think." After some reflection Alixie said, "I think Pride was one thing that I did that really pushed me more than anything else. I knew that I was representing not just myself, but all of the other members too and that made me a better person."

STAAR AND AP TESTING NEXT WEEK AT WESTSIDE

Testing continues next week at Westside. Student schedules will be impacted, so even if your child is not testing, this article contains important information.

Next week is possibly the most complicated week of testing as we have Advanced Placement (AP) testing and STAAR testing. Students who are taking the AP exams have signed up for them and will receive a reminder about those exams. The bulk of our testers next week are STAAR testers. We will have STAAR exams for students who started 9th grade in 2011 or 2012 and are enrolled in the following classes:

Social studies: World Geography and World History

Math: Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II

Science: Biology and Chemistry

Social studies will test on Monday, Math on Wednesday, and Science on Thursday. Students will receive a list in homeroom this week detailing which exams they need to take. Students might be taking a course they are not currently enrolled in if they are re-taking an exam from last year. Also, if any student has a conflict with an AP test at the same time, the student will take the AP exam and then complete the STAAR test on its retake day.

Students will receive a sheet in homeroom this week detailing which exams they need to take. On testing days all non-testers will have late arrival. For testers, there will be no late start on Thursday, May 9th.

If non-testers would like to eat on campus, lunch will be served from 12:30-1:00 PM. All students should arrive by 1:00 PM for class. Buses will run at the normal time for the testers, so the late arrival is only for students who can arrange their own transportation to Westside. If you have any questions, please contact Stephanie Matlock at 281.920.8011.

FIVE WESTSIDE STUDENTS HONORED AS ACADEMIC AMBASSADORS

Westside High School was proud to have five students represent our school as academic ambassadors at the inaugural Academic Signing Day on April 26, 2013. The event mimicked an athletic signing day event, but honored students for their academic achievements.

The ambassadors were selected from students who have committed to a college and received scholarships. Each student was selected because of their academic excellence, their determination at overcoming personal obstacles and for performing great service to their school or community. At the end of the event, all students signed a certificate of intent for a two or four-year college or university.

Congratulations to Jessica Anderson, Mustafa Hussein, Kyle Meyers, Emily Rodriguez, and Nicole Zimmerer for being selected as Westside's first ever Academic Ambassadors!

VOTE FOR WESTSIDE AND HELP US WIN UP TO $1000

Please help WEGA and Westside out by voting for our Shell Eco Marathon car. Winning cars will win grants up to $1000. You can vote each day until May 10th. We are currently 750 votes behind so we have some catching up to do!

SOPHOMORES SELECTED AS ATLAS COMMODITIES INTERN

Westside would like to congratulate Taylor Masaryk and Marah Portier for being selected for the Atlas Commodities first ever summer internship program! Over seventy students applied from fourteen different HISD high schools and only ten were selected. Atlas Commodities is sponsoring this internship in collaboration with the mayor's office to provide a mentorship and training opportunity to sophomores within HISD. As stated by Atlas Commodities, "The Atlas Scholars Program offers students a uniquely broad experience in the financial and energy industries. Tomorrow's leaders gain valuable experience through meaningful responsibilities and individual mentorship. By working with proven leaders in their respected fields, the program is designed to instill each student with the core skills necessary to grow into respected, influential role models for tomorrow's students." Marah is still undecided about her future career path, but she is elated that she now has the opportunity to gain insight into the energy and financial markets. On the other hand, Taylor is an East One Business Academy student that knows he wants to pursue an MBA after college. Although on two opposite spectrums, both students are looking forward to the real work experience they will gain from the internship!

Congratulations to you both. We can't wait to hear about your experiences!

POSSE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS STARTS

Westside High School is proudly graduating our first three Posse Scholars this spring! We are already looking for our next deserving group of student nominees from the class of 2014!

The Posse Foundation identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. The Foundation extends to these students the opportunity to pursue multicultural teams, "posses," of ten students. The Foundation's partner universities and colleges award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships.

Posse Houston will conduct a dynamic three round interview process to select students. In the third round the colleges will be interviewing directly with the students and they will select ten students for their school. You will be told prior to round three which school is interested in you. If you have no desire to attend that school, you will not have an option to choose a different school. If you are selected as one of their final ten, you will be granted early action admission to that school and must commit to attending.

Once selected as a Posse Scholar, you will meet weekly (two hour meetings) with Posse trainers and your assigned posse for the pre-collegiate training program. During your first two years of college you will meet regularly with your campus mentor and posse. After you graduate from college, they have a career program that helps Posse Scholars transition from being leaders on campus to leaders in the workforce. If you'd like more information you can visit their website at www.possefoundation.org

Applications are only for current juniors who will have completed 19 credits by June 10, 2013. Please submit your completed application by May 10, 2013 at 3:30 pm. We recommend typing your responses in Word and then copying and pasting your responses below. Please use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation throughout the application.

Juniors can access the application from their Naviance account or from here.

Will you be one of our twenty? This is the opportunity of a lifetime and can put you on the fast track to a successful career - make sure to take advantage of this opportunity!

It's common knowledge now that I am leaving this extraordinary school. What a journey I have had! When I think of Westside, I think of it as the most dynamic place in the world! Seriously, what school has dance teams that travel to China; a drill team that wins awards all year long,  awesome cheerleaders; a remarkable rally pack; an always strong football team; a talented band AND a jazz band; a prestigious girl's volleyball team; a winning basketball, baseball, and Lady Wolves softball teams; UIL teams that have put Westside on the academic map; an all-out culinary program with a fully loaded restaurant located inside our school; an HST, business and engineering academy; an amazingly active NHS; a triple digit student ambassador program that VOLUNTEERS to sacrifice summer time to work Wolf Camp; unparalleled AP Art programs; and even AP Calculus classes who proudly wear their pi shirts just for fun! AND, finally, I got to join and connect all of these wonderful groups together in student leadership with our stupendous Student Council - filled with the best of the best of our WHS young leaders who want to make a difference even beyond their involvement in other groups! And truly, the crazy thing is that's not all! There is just too much going on here to list everything!

I've done and led a lot of "stuff" here at Westside and I have loved it all. However, if I were asked what the most rewarding part of my time here was, I would have to say, it was any and every opportunity that led me back to having experiences with the students. With all the extraordinary "stuff" I've participated in, what I love most about Westside is the heart and soul of our campus, our STUDENTS! Thank you all for seven years of amazing heart-filled, radiant memories. Know that in the life of this school leader, you have made a difference to me! If I had one parting wish for all of you, it would be that you will also venture out, LOVE what you do and make a difference to others wherever you go! Go Wolves!
