Bike Safety Awareness Month

Bike Safety

May is "Bike Safety Awareness Month"

Take the opportunity to reinforce these important bike safety tips with your children:

Before riding your bike make sure to:

  • Wear a helmet -  Make sure it is properly adjusted, fitted and buckled.
  • Dress to be seen -   Wear brightly colored clothes and reflective gear.   Remember, just because you can see the driver, that doesn't mean that they can see you.
  • Check your bike for safety - Make sure the tires have enough air, the brakes and gears work, the chain isn't loose and the wheels and bolts are tight.
  • Tie and tuck- Make sure your shoe laces are tied and pant legs can't get caught up in your bike.

When riding your bike, make sure you:

  • Look and listen for traffic.
  • Watch for vehicles going in and out of driveways.
  • Keep both hands on the handlebars, except when signaling -  carry books and other items in a backpack.
  • Stop before crossing the street, entering a road, or turning - look left, right, left, and behind you for traffic, including pedestrians, bicycles, and cars. .

Organic Volunteers Needed
Hughes Academy's students have been hard at work developing and planting the organic garden, and we are now waiting on the plants to grow! We will need several volunteers over the summer to help pick vegetables and get them distributed. We plan to donate the first crops to families in the Hughes' neighborhood. Please contact Ame Holcombe, ameholcombe@gmail.com, if you are interested in helping. This will be a great way for students to earn Beta Club hours or for families to participate in community service. We hope you will get involved!
