Superintendent's Letter
Dear Blaine County Neighbors,
As I write this letter it is one of those perfect mornings: clear, crisp, with gorgeous blue skies framing the mountains. We are approaching the summer break. For many of us this means some down time to relax and refresh. As we pause to restore ourselves, please allow me to extend our deepest appreciation to the wonderful Blaine County Community that so vigorously supports its schools. Read more here.

Alturas Elementary Students Inspired by History and Art

4th grade students at Alturas Elementary were inspired by local history when they studied historic buildings in Ketchum, made collagraphs inspired by the buildings, and then raised funds to donate to the Regional History Department at the Community Library. Art teacher Joni Cashman collaborated with 4th grade classroom teachers to incorporate the project into the 4th grade social studies curriculum, which focuses on Idaho history. The students raised $1,700 with the help of WOW Students. They also donated collagraphs to the Community Library.

Hemingway Elementary Students Use Reading and Creativity to Enter and Win Lego Competition
Hemingway Elementary students entered and won the 2nd grade division for the first ever Lego Brick Starter Contest. According to the Lego website, "The premise is simple: we are asking teachers and their students to create a classroom project that shows others how to do something, such as solve fractions, retell a favorite story, or design a classroom logo. The only requirement is a single LEGO brick that serves an important role in the project." Jana Fitzpatrick's reading students showed other students how to make a farm out of Legos, inspired by the book, "The Toy Farm" by Jenny Giles. The students used Legos, paper and toy animals. Fitzpatrick said, "We want to thank Scott Slonim, Hemingway Tech teacher, for sharing his Legos with us."

Teresa McGoffin Named Director of Technology
The Blaine County School District is pleased to announce that Teresa McGoffin has been named the new Director of Technology, replacing Tim Rocco who resigned several months ago. Teresa was the first technologist hired by the district in 1996 to bring Internet and email to all schools. As the Network Administrator she has been invaluable in expanding our infrastructure to include phones in every classroom, ubiquitous Internet and robust wireless. She serves on the Safety and Security Task Force and is passionate about the safety of our staff and students. She has been a leader in bringing in new technologies such as virtual servers and electronic curriculum to the district.
When Teresa came to Idaho via Seattle in 1995, she was the first Instructional Technology Specialist for the College of Southern Idaho's Twin Falls campus. She has taught computer courses since the early 80's and continues to offer enrichment courses at the CSI Hailey campus.
Ms. McGoffin stated, "I am very excited to step into this role. Together with our dedicated staff at the Technology Department. I will continue our commitment to provide excellent technology resources and support in Blaine County schools."
