Superintendent Letter to Staff
Dr. GwenCarol Holmes

Dear Colleagues,

Wow, it is May already! Another school year is drawing to a close and it seems like we just began. We have made progress in achieving our goal of each and every student being a 21st Century learner so they are college and/or career ready at graduation. At the risk of leaving things off the list, please allow me to reflect on some of the big steps we have taken this year. Read more here.

Buildings and Grounds

The Buildings and Grounds Department has been given the opportunity to collaborate with the Water Club students at the Wood River High School. Bottle filler/hydration stations have been installed on six of the existing drinking fountains. By utilizing these fillers, the students and staff will be able to eliminate the waste from thousands of plastic disposable water bottles each year.  Jim Chatterton has worked diligently to ensure the units were installed before the end of this school year.

Les Wilson and Chuck Gough are busy installing  two new pieces of playground equipment at Hailey Elementary.  These whirl spinners were purchased by the PTA and are slated to be fully functional sometime during the week of May 18.

Chillers and cooling towers have been brought online to keep the buildings cool during the last few months of school.  As the year comes to a close the custodians will start to gear up to begin the deep cleaning that will take place during the summer months.

Finance
Mike Chatterton

The Finance Department has been busy working on the 2015-2016 budget which starts July 1, 2015.  The upcoming budget will be the same dollar amount as last year and the same dollar amount for the past three years.  We have been able to accommodate staff increases through attrition, alternative salary schedules for the certified staff and early retirement incentive packages.  Although the coming budget will not increase, the low hanging fruit that we have been able to use to keep the same budget amount is nearing the end.  This coming year will be the first year we have made some minor budget adjustments on programs and practices that have needed addressed for a long time.

The Board of Trustees has approved the new non-certified salary schedule.  As I noted last month, the new salary schedule was to reward employees for longevity and education in which we were able to accomplish.  This new salary schedule will reward the non-certified staff members for years to come.

With the school year coming to an end please have all of your reimbursement requests to the finance department by the end of June for those funds coming from the 2014-2015 fiscal year. The new funds will be available after July 1st.
Sun Valley Center for the Arts Needs Volunteers

In place for this summer, current volunteer opportunities include distributing posters in Hailey, Ketchum and Bellevue (June), ushering at Company of Fools' summer production (July, ages 16 +) and working at the Arts & Crafts Festival (August 7-9, ages 13 +).

We continue to work on deepening our student volunteer experience by growing opportunities directed to specific interests or skills. Some future opportunities might be prepping for and/or assisting with classroom enrichment and Family Day art projects, Center front desk assistant and school tours.  We welcome any ideas you may have as well.

Please share this website link with students who are interested in earning community service hours this summer or in the future.
