Students Celebrate Earth Day

Students across the district will celebrate Earth Day this week. Here are a few examples of those celebrations and lessons, including a few ways the district is saving energy and resources.
Students Learn Recycling Tips and Earth Stewardship from Blaine County Blaine County staff gave a recycling lesson to all of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes at Hemingway Elementary School in honor of Earth Day. The presentations focused on being good stewards of the environment. Students learned how, where, and why to recycle. Find out more from Director of County Operations Charlene Nelson. Read more here.
Student Produces Recycling Public Service Announcement Have you heard this recycling message on KECH 95.3 or Star 107.5? The public service announcements are sponsored by Blaine County and feature members of the Hemingway fifth grade recycling club. This public service announcement features the voice of Bel Clayton (pictured above) talking about plastic bag recycling.
Students Raise Funds and Install Water Hydration Station

W.A.T.E.R., the environmental and recycling club at Wood River High School raised funds for a newly installed Elkay water hydration station at the school. Students will screen the film F.L.O.W. at 6:30 p.m. on April 22 at the Community Campus. Pictured above is Hallie MacPherson with the newly installed hydration station.
Learn About Energy Savings in Blaine County Schools Curious about the electricity, gas and carbon savings from the recent energy retrofits at Bellevue Elementary, Carey School, Community Campus, Hailey Elementary, Silver Creek High School and Wood River High School? Check out the Energy Savings Dashboard or watch an interactive display at each of the schools. In order to view the interactive dashboard, you will need to install Microsoft's Silverlight program and you may need to disable any pop-up blockers. For tech help, call 578-5410.
E-flyers Save Paper and Trees "The ERC applauds the Blaine County School District for moving to digital Friday Folders. This action reduces a large amount of paper use and eliminates the need to recycle that paper, and for all the paper that may not have ever been recycled, it reduces the amount of waste that goes into the landfill." Hadley Debree, ERC
Do you like the sound of saving 88,434 pieces of paper and almost 11 trees? Welcome to Peachjar. The new e-flyer system was implemented in October, 2014 by the Blaine County School District. Rather than sending paper flyers through the schools, nonprofit organizations upload digital flyers and send them to parents through email. The flyers are stored on the school websites for reference. Parents, look for your school flyers every Friday in your in-box.
Students Collaborate and Learn
4th grade students at Bellevue Elementary formed a student-driven Recycle Club along with the Bellevue head custodian Jeff Jones (pictured above with students). Students created a giant RECYCLE collage out of colored milk bottle caps and made a giant paper mache earth that will be hung in the cafeteria. The students are also presenting an anti-litterbug skit at a morning assembly. In Engineering Tech, 4th and 5th grade students are learning about their own personal carbon footprints and collaborating with the Recycling Center in Ohio Gulch.
