Take the Second Strategic Plan Survey

Last month 467 people took the first survey. Add your voice to the conversation today Take the Second Strategic Plan survey here. Community members are welcome to take the survey as well as parents, staff, and students.
Why Take This Survey? This survey invites you to continue the conversation with your colleagues, your neighbors, and your fellow students. Read through the ideas of all of our stakeholders. Consider which ideas are most important to you. The ideas that filter to the top will be used by the Strategic Plan Steering Committee to create vision and goal statements for our future. We ask you to use your best critical thinking when considering the ideas in the survey.
What is the Next Step? Join us in May for the opportunity to provide feedback on the strategies identified to meet our goals, and to hear more about the district's mission and vision based on your ideas.
Where Did the Ideas in This Survey Come From? In February, Blaine County School District held the second in a series of meetings for the Strategic Plan. 398 staff, students, parents and community members answered questions about the vision and goals of the district.
Goals were based on three different sets of information: District demographic and academic data, Daniel Pink's presentation, and the 21st Century Learner and Educator Profile. See the presentation here.

Fiscal Year 2016 Staffing: How New Staffing and Reassignment Will Impact Students

Last week you might have read the letter from the Superintendent here.
New staffing and reassignments will impact students in the following ways:
-
Provide three additional teachers at the secondary level (where the majority of our students are currently).
-
Provide two additional English Language Development teachers to support the development of language instruction in all classrooms.
-
Provide a Mental Health/Substance Abuse Therapist to ensure more students successfully graduate high school.
-
Provide an additional Clinical Social Worker so all schools have these services for their students.
-
Provide a full-time Student Resource Officer at the Wood River Middle School.
-
Provide a full-time translator to be the primary support in translating documents district-wide so that bilingual staff in the schools can have more time to work with students.
-
Realign the distribution of staff that support students with reading difficulties based on school need. We have schools with 37 students eligible for reading support and schools with 206 students eligible for reading support that are currently receiving equal staffing, not equitable staffing.
-
Realign the distribution of staff that support students receiving special education services so that allocation is based on the number of minutes of service provided and degree of intensity of disabilities.
The proposed Fiscal Year 2016 Budget will tentatively be reviewed by the Board of Trustees in April and again at the May regular Board meeting. Stay posted for a full schedule of meetings at a later date. Public comment is always welcome.

BCSD Partner Updates:
SVSS Brings Time for Three to Wood River High School
Wood River High School orchestra students had a rare opportunity to learn an arrangement of work commissioned by the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and written by Time for Three and Kenji Bunch. It will premiere at the Sun Valley Pavilion on Aug. 4.
Using this newly commissioned work as a jumping off point, Kenji Bunch arranged melodies for the Wood River High School advanced chamber orchestra. High school orchestra teacher Rebecca Martin has been teaching the piece to her advanced chamber orchestra members who, on March 4, had the opportunity to work on the piece directly with the composers, Kenji Bunch and the members of Time for Three.
Time for Three also performed a concert for Wood River High School 11th and 12th graders.
