Students Make a Difference

VOICE I students are making a difference in their community. Community service projects help students learn how to become citizens and learn social, ethical and environmental responsibility.
Wood River High School teacher Elise Deklotz wrote, "The VOICE I program at Wood River High School has been busy this fall. We supported the Hunger Coalition with several different projects both at their sight in Woodside and at the Hope Garden. VOICE I also participated in the Fire Restoration Project with Wood River Land Trust. Our students helped to plant sage brush at the Green Horn trail head to help to stop the erosion of soil in the area."

Gaming for a Cause
Wood River High School student Denon Strope gamed for a cause, raising $1,500 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals through an event called Extra Life.
WRHS Information Technology teacher Sam Schrader wrote, "Denon worked long and hard on this project, setting up a venue at the Community Campus, soliciting donations, recruiting and motivating participants, securing and setting up equipment, finding adults to supervise the event, working through the daily issues and all the paperwork that arose. He did everything on his own, and was planning, coordinating and asking questions of me and other advisers every day for weeks. He really put his heart and soul into this."
Denon is part of the IT Academy Club at WRHS.

Students Study the Environment
Second grade students at Carey Elementary studied animal habitats and visited Carey Lake. Teacher Lacee Peterson wrote, "This experience is always one that the students are excited to start and the anticipation keeps them engaged throughout the study of habitats that surround Carey. At the beginning of the unit we set some learning goals and expectations. Within their groups the students are able to answer many of their own curiosities through their research and learning. They meet the goal of understanding the relationship between matter and energy in living systems by being able to discuss how animals are suited to live in different habitats and being able to recognize why animals live in different habitats."
