How Are Our Students Changing the World? One Project and Passion at a Time

Is it an overstatement to say that our students are changing the world? Perhaps. But when you read about the projects they undertake as part of a 21st Century education, you might feel optimistic about the next generation. It's one full of energy, enthusiasm, and hope. Students are sharing their athletic and artistic talents, taking care of their environment, and contributing to both their future and our collective past as they learn 21st Century skills.
 

 

Students Conduct Risk Assessment of Poles Near New Highway Construction

How much of a collision risk do the new utility poles along Highway 75 present? WRHS Physics students are asking real world questions and using scientific research methods to explore the potential impacts of the new highway construction.  The public is invited to a student presentation on Friday, November 14th from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at Wood River High School in the Distance Learning Lab.  Read more.
 

Students Create Public Service Announcements for Recycling

The fifth grade recycling club  at Hemingway Elementary recorded public service announcements for KECH and KSKI.  They focus on how to recycle plastic, mixed paper, tin and aluminum cans and plastic bags.  They recorded them in the tech room using Garage Band and recycling club advisor Scott Slonim emailed them to the station.  The students have been working with Char Nelson, the person in charge of recycling for Blaine County.  Next up for the club, trying to get plastic bag recycling containers in Ketchum, Hailey and Sun Valley!  Listen to a PSA here. 

 

Students Restore Habitat from Preacher Bridge Fire

Carey students partnered with Idaho Fish and Game and Bureau of Land Management to restore habitat in the area of the Preacher Bridge Fire.  The fire burned 50,000 acres south of Carey.  Science teacher Lane Durtschi writes that his students were concerned about the loss of vegetation and habitat.  Read more.
 

 

Students Take Ownership of Learning 


Silver Creek High School students completed their Senior Project this week, presenting to a panel of community members, staff and parents.  Senior Project Advisor Julie Berry said, "A lot of students didn't think they could do this.  After the presentations they realized that they could accomplish a significant independent project. This was a milestone for many students." The nine week projects also helped students identify personal learning goals, which is part of the school's move to Big Picture Learning.  Levi Catangcatang, pictured above, taught the martial art Crav Maga weekly at the Blaine County Recreation District as part of his Senior Project.

 

Student Selected for Carnegie Hall Honors Performance

Ashlie Pulleiro, a Senior at Wood River High School has been selected for the 2015 High School Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall.  She will perform at Carnegie Hall in February 2015 with the Honors Choir as an Alto 1. Participation in one of the three Honors Ensembles is limited to the highest rated high school performers from across North America and selected schools internationally.  Read more.

Students Honor the Past with Veteran's Day Plans

Students across the district will honor the past during Veteran's Day.  At Alturas Elementary, former Woodside Elementary Principal Gary St. George will be the special guest during an event that includes musical performances arranged by Dorinda Rendahl.  At Wood River High School, students will honor local veterans with two presentations for the entire student body.  Bellevue Elementary is also inviting local veterans to the school.  Check your school's website for details on Veteran's Day celebrations.  Look for follow-up photos in next week's update and on Facebook and Twitter.


Students Recognized as Athletes of the Season at WRMS

Wood River Middle School's Athletes of the Season" for Girls' 7th Grade volleyball and 7th and 8th Grade football are Emily Vandenberg, Sariah Nilsen, Isaac Loomis, and Andrew Nelson. Emily and Sariah were chosen by their coach Ms. Gloor for their success on the volleyball court and in the classroom.  Isaac was chosen by his coaches Mr. Douthit, Mr. Greenfield, and Mr. Humphreys for his success on the football field and in the classroom. Andrew was chosen by his coaches Mr. Kaminski and Mr. Sanchez for his success on the football field and in the classroom.

Blaine County has an important project underway:  the Comprehensive Plan update.  The Plan is a visionary document that serves as a foundation for future decisions on land use, infrastructure, services, recreation, natural areas and more.  This survey will take about 5 minutes to complete, and will help us develop the best Comprehensive Plan possible!  Thank you so much!

BCSD Parents: Look for the Clarity Technology Survey and Parent Tech Classes Starting Soon

In order to better understand the technology landscape of our community, the district is utilizing the Clarity survey platform to assess strengths and weaknesses of technology use. We will be opening the survey the week of November 10.  Find out what we learned from the last Clarity survey, what changes we have made as a result and read the schedule of upcoming parent tech classes here.
