How Does Art Communicate a Message?

Wood River High School students in Betty Ervin's class learned how art is a form of "visual communication in which the artist may create a composition that targets a specific audience."  What audience and what message? Through the instructional methods of International Baccalaureate, students studied junk food and health food and created posters to educate high school students on the perils of junk food.  Look for the posters the next time you are WRHS. Read the IB unit plan here.

Which Animals are Predators or Prey?

Hemingway Elementary students in 2nd grade visited the SNRA recently. Students used critical thinking skills to collaborate and problem solve whether an animal was a predator or prey by looking at evidence presented to them. They also had to decide if an animal hibernated, migrated, or stayed during the winter.  Afterward, the students hiked through Adam's Gulch.

Fraction Field Trip

Yes, a fraction field trip.  Down the hallways and through the school, Alturas Elementary 5th grade students searched high and low for fractions.  Students took photos with their iPods and created their own word problems explaining the fractions in the photos. They recorded and shared the "field trip" using Google Presentation. According to 5th grade teacher Kiley Crill,  "this activity helped students estimate fractions which they may have had difficulty visualizing."  See some of the fractions and find out which fraction is illustrated in the photo above here.

WRMS Athlete of the Season

It's an honor to announce "Wood River Middle School's Athletes of the Season" for Girls' 8th Grade volleyball - Annie Kaminski. Annie was chosen by her coach Mrs. Vandenberg for her success on the volleyball court and in the classroom. Watch the video about Annie Kaminski here.

Students Celebrate Day of the Dead - Dia de los Muertos

Students at Alturas Elementary learned about Day of the Dead/Dia De Los Muertos. Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday honors friends and family members who have died. It is celebrated through music, food, art and altars commemorating family members and loved ones.  Activities included art projects such as papel picado, sugar skulls, masks, paper mache flowers and other traditional crafts.  Some students wrote about a loved one who passed away. Students contributed photos of family members and loved ones for the altar.
