Students Lead Forest Restoration Efforts

Wood River Land Trust's (WRLT) Student Conservation Council (SCC) partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to do their part and help with Beaver Creek fire restoration efforts. On October 17 and 18, the SCC organized volunteer efforts to help replant 20 acres on public lands at Greenhorn. Funds raised through their Students for Seedlings project purchased 1,000 sagebrush and bitterbrush seedlings and 5 acres of native seed mix. Students from Bellevue Elementary and Wood River High School volunteered for the restoration project.

Re-planting natives helps to mitigate the impacts from fire by:

  • Stabilizing soil to prevent or diminish the size of mudslides;

  • Decreasing the amount of silt in the river caused by run-off from rain storms; and

  • Promoting the growth of native species to help combat invasive species expansion.

Hands-On Learning at Craters of the Moon

From Hemingway Elementary 5th grade teacher Heidi Copeland, "The 5th grade at Hemingway went to Craters of the Moon as a culminating field trip on their unit studying geology and changes to the Earth's surface, including plate tectonics and volcanoes.  Students were in collaborative groups and participated in three different stations led by the teachers.  Following the group work, students explored the trails and sights of Craters of the Moon. This was a fun-filled day that also provided authentic learning in a real world situation!"

Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  Bullying prevention is on-going and year around in the Blaine County School District.  This month we will highlight some of the programs throughout the district that help us create caring communities in our schools.

What is Bullying? Read more.

Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

Week 1: We learned about the Leader in Me program and found out about the McGrath bullying training that is used by our schools.
