Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  Bullying prevention is on-going and year around in the Blaine County School District.  This month we will highlight some of the programs throughout the district that help us create caring communities in our schools.

What is Bullying? Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.

This week: Learn about the Leader in Me program and find out about the McGrath bullying training that is used by our schools.

All elementary schools and Carey School K-12 use the Leader in Me program. Based on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the program teaches 7 Habits for students.

Training in bullying prevention is provided by McGrath.  Social workers, principals and staff use the processes identified in prevention, identification and reporting incidents of bullying.  For parent information, click here.  For the incident reporting form located on the Social Workers' website, click here.

October Professional Development Days - Teachers as Learners

Staff across the district participated in professional development on October 2 and 3.

Elementary staff and Carey staff K-12 focused on Project Based Learning, developing essential questions and honing their 21st Century instructional skills. Secondary staff focused on the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.  Silver Creek High School staff redesigned their school for the Big Picture Learning program.

Staff also received training on safety, CPR, Google, Prometheans, nonviolent crisis intervention, curriculum mapping and more.  All training will enhance the the 21st Century Learner and Educator Profile.

Dr. GwenCarol Holmes visited many of the meetings and said, "Each group was working on developing authentic learning experiences for our children that help them develop the 21st Century learning skills and make connections across the disciplines. Each group was involved in conversations about rubrics and how to use or develop them for assessing these 21st Century skills. Together we are working on preparing ourselves to be able to prepare our students to be 21st Century learners."
