Was there any parent/teacher/student input in creating the new policy?
There were teachers and parents on both the Wellness Policy Committee and the Policy Committee. A student representative is on the Student Wellness Committee.
Do you think that student input/involvement might result in a better "buy-in" especially on the part of older students?
That's an idea for the Student Wellness Committee to consider. There is a student representative on the Student Wellness Committee. We also have new student representatives for the Board of Trustees who will contribute a student perspective.
I have heard that at least one elementary school has done away with birthday celebrations all together. Is this true?
This is not true. There might be classrooms that have decided to celebrate birthdays without food or to celebrate birthdays on one designated day each month, but birthday celebrations have not been banned in any of the elementary schools.
Who developed the new policy and what was the process by which it is was approved?
