Valley's Biggest Book Club

Students at Wood River Middle School held the Wood River Valley's biggest book club meeting recently to discuss their summer reading choices. Teachers and staff led a book group discussion about the books on the summer reading list.

Organized by teacher librarian Susan Tabor Boesch, the purpose of the book club is to help students learn that reading is fun and can also be a social activity. "I'd like to thank our public libraries and local book stores for helping students access the books on the summer reading list," said Tabor Boesch.

Wagon's Ho: A Hands-On History Lesson for the 21st Century

4th grade students across the district learned about pioneers through hands-on activities during Wagon's Ho.  The Wagon's Ho event is a kick-off to a year-long study of Idaho history in all 4th grade classes across the district.

How are 21st Century skills learned in a 19th Century environment?  21st Century skills like collaboration are developed when students work in teams to wash clothes and cook lunch over a Dutch oven.  21st Century skills like communication are learned when all of the students write a letter reflecting on their experiences at the end of the day.  Read more about Wagon's Ho in the Boise Weekly.

Your Student Wellness Policy Questions Answered

In a continuation of questions and answers about the Student Wellness Policy, we are providing answers to questions we receive from parents, staff and community members.  Next week will will talk about other aspects of the Student Wellness Policy, including physical and emotional health.  Thank you for reading. Email us your questions.

Was there any parent/teacher/student input in creating the new policy?

There were teachers and parents on both the Wellness Policy Committee and the Policy Committee.  A student representative is on the Student Wellness Committee.

Do you think that student input/involvement might result in a better "buy-in" especially on the part of older students?

That's an idea for the Student Wellness Committee to consider. There is a student representative on the Student Wellness Committee.  We also have new student representatives for the Board of Trustees who will contribute a student perspective.

I have heard that at least one elementary school has done away with birthday celebrations all together.  Is this true?

This is not true. There might be classrooms that have decided to celebrate birthdays without food or to celebrate birthdays on one designated day each month, but birthday celebrations have not been banned in any of the elementary schools.

Who developed the new policy and what was the process by which it is was approved?

Patrons and parents were invited to apply to the Wellness Policy Committee April 29, 2013.  The deadline was Friday, May 10, 2013.  The people selected for the Wellness Policy Committee were: Kathryn Graves, Stacey Whitman, Kathy Noble, Kris Stoffer, Amy Schlatter, Scott McLean, Angie Martinez, Duane Sorenson, Kandy Blackburn, Liz Richards, John Blackman.
