Students Break New Ground: Meet Our First Generation Students
These students are among those who are the first in their family to go to college. A first-generation college student is defined as a student whose parent(s)/legal guardian(s) have not continued their education beyond high school. Being first-generation is a very proud accomplishment. Congratulations to those students who are breaking new ground and continuing their education beyond high school.

Students Recognized for Doing the Right Thing

Nineteen students throughout the community were nominated for "Do the Right Thing" and five were selected for special recognition and prizes at a ceremony at Hailey City Hall.
The students in the top 5 who were recognized for "Do The Right Thing," were Wood River Middle School's Alfonso Baeza, Kaitlyn Hayes and Jessica Thomas, Wood River High schooler Chase Hutchinson, and Hemingway Elementary's Karen Ramirez.
The City of Hailey Fire and Police Departments, together with the Blaine County School District, launched the new program, which is designed to reinforce positive behavior among youth in the community.
Founded in Miami, the program spread nationwide and now regularly recognizes thousands of youth for positive behavior. The newest chapter of "Do The Right Thing" in Hailey, is the first in Idaho.
All students who were nominated will receive letters of recognition. They are: Harrison Blamires, Devon Brown, Carter Busdon, Heidi Carrillo, Kayla Chaffey, Marcela del Real, Evathea Drougas, Will Griffith, Kaitlyn Hayes, Erin Hennessy, Jasmine Jordan, Inez Kraynick, Sam Laski and Willa Laski.
The next round of nominations is currently open at www.haileycityhall.org and will close on September 1. Anyone is welcome to nominate a student from anywhere in Blaine County.

Students in Wood River Middle School's Eighth Grade Foundational Math classes with either Mr. Bruce Clark or Ms. Sharon Wyeth used Hands On Equations to learn how to solve any algebraic equation that uses one variable. More dimensions are continually added to these equations, such as variables on both sides of the equation and needing to use the distributive property of multiplication over division.
According to math teacher Sharon Wyeth, "Normally as the equations get longer and require more steps, the students start struggling. But not this year. A Blaine County Education Foundation Grant allowed three classrooms to use the "Hands on Equations" manipulatives. The pawns and cubes help students distinguish plain numbers from how many unknowns are in the equation and keep them from adding the abstract terms when they really represent two different items.

Silver Creek High School Students: Engaged, Caring and Active

Silver Creek High School students are engaged, caring and active. Ten students, with the support of the WOW Students, collected money and bags of food for Paws "4" Hunger. This collaborative fundraising endeavour between the Blaine County Animal Shelter and the Hunger Coalition helps families struggling to make ends meet keep their beloved pets fed during hard times .
Placing donation jars at The Barkin' Basement, 5B Paws n Claws, Jane's in Hailey and The Community Campus, students collected $100 in cash and change and 7 bags of food for beloved pets. WOW Students donated $250 dollars to the cause on behalf of the student's efforts.
Students gained knowledge about the Blaine County Animal Shelter's no-kill policy, the importance of spaying and neutering pets, tagging pets and the process of preparing dogs and cats for adoption.
Special Thanks to the Blaine County Animal Shelter's Brittany Farrell, Mr. Porth, SCHS Science Teacher and Mike Glenn, SCHS Principal and WOW Students.
