Student Dares Classmates at Carey Graduation
Over 300 people turned out to watch ten students receive their diplomas from Carey High School on Thursday, May 30. Salutatorian Lilly Rivera dared her classmates to "Never stop learning." The students are well on their way to accepting that challenge. 100% of the graduates plan to attend college. Collectively, the graduating class earned 61 dual college credits before graduating from Carey High School.

Student Graduates with 21 Dual College Credits

Carey Senior Ashley Durtschi graduated last week with a high school diploma and 21 dual college credits. Ashley will attend BYU-Idaho and plans to study elementary education after serving as a peer tutor for 6th grade students this year. Ashley was active in athletics and academics, in addition to having perfect attendance. She served as class president and editor of the year-book. Ashley's outgoing personality and "Can-Do" attitude left an impression on Carey students and staff. Carey School counselor Kimberly Hochendoner said, "She was a real asset to the school."

Student Wins State Contest

Woodside Elementary student Carly Ching won a state poster contest. Sponsored by Saris Cycling Group, the theme of the contest was President John F. Kennedy's quote, "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride." She received a certificate, a new Schwinn bike, helmet and bike bell. According to Woodside Elementary art teacher Joni Cashman, "We are very proud of her for representing and winning for the state of Idaho." Congratulations, Carly!

Model UN Ranks Nationally
The Model UN program at Wood River High School was listed as one of the top 25 schools on the West Coast for 2013-2014. Model UN adviser Joel Zellers, "We are the only Idaho school listed is this prestigious ranking."
According to the Model UN publication Best Delegate:
"The West region consists of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The top 25 is determined by each team's top four aggregate scores across all conferences nationwide. California teams are the most represented in this region."

Students Recognized for Doing the Right Thing

Nineteen students throughout the community were nominated for Doing the Right Thing and five were selected for recognition at a ceremony on Monday, June 2 at 5:15 pm at Hailey City Hall.
The students who will be recognized include Alfonso Beaza, Kaitlyn Hayes, Chase Hutchinson, Karen Ramirez and Jessica Thomas.
The City of Hailey Fire and Police Departments, together with the Blaine County School District, launched a new program called Do The Right Thing. The program is designed to reinforce positive behavior among youth in the community. Founded in Miami, Florida, the program spread nationwide and now recognizes thousands of youth each month for positive behavior. The newest chapter of Do The Right Thing in Hailey, Idaho is the first in Idaho.
Students who were nominated will receive letters of recognition. They include: Harrison Blamires, Devon Brown, Carter Busdon, Heidi Carrillo, Kayla Chaffey, Marcela del Real, Evathea Drougas, Will Griffith, Kaitlyn Hayes, Erin Hennessy, Jasmine Jordan, Inez Kraynick, Sam Laski and Willa Laski. The next round of nominations is currently open at www.haileycityhall.org and will close on September 1. Everyone is welcome to nominate a student for Doing the Right Thing.

School Ends with Celebrations
As the school year draws to a close, students across the district are celebrating with outdoor games and barbeques. Annual traditions include the "Mom and Me Tea" and "Dad and Me Barbeque" at Wood River High School, as well as events at other schools throughout the district.
