Debate Team Savors State Championship and Continues Legacy

Wood River High School's debate team captured the Class B state debate championship in competition sponsored by the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA).  The event was held at Borah High School in Boise in March.

Wood River's 2014 state championship debate team includes:  Lily Worst, Chase Hutchinson, Yara Jabbour Al Maalouf, Sam Burns, Max Mihalic, Connor Hayes, Annie Ashfield, Liza Buell, Matt Reidy, Michael Madsen, Nathan Stouffer, Clay Cutler and coach Susan Worst and assistant Karl Nordstrom.  State alternates were Illiah Pfau and Victoria Brown.

Wood River has a strong tradition of debate teams, dating back to the teams coached by IHSAA Hall of Fame debate and speech coach Tim Neville.  In all Wood River has won 18 district IV debate titles since 1978 and 10 state debate championships since the 1978-79 season.

The years between Worst and Neville were headed by retired speech/debate coach and teacher Carol Stilz, who won a district championship in 2009.

The WRHS debate team was also the 1995 and 1997 National Forensics League District Champions. These only help solidify the legacy and tradition of Wood River debate, not only on a local district level, but nationally as well.

Holocaust Survivor Speaks to Students

Holocaust survivor Rose Beal spoke to students, parents and the public at Wood River Middle School

Beal narrowly escaped execution in Germany as a Jew during the Holocaust. She grew up in Frankfurt, Germany, where the Nazis closed her school when she was in her early teens. She was one of 200 out of 17,000 Jews to survive a grueling deportation to Poland just before the outbreak of the war. In her public presentations, Beal recounts how she survived harassment, raids and the infamous 1938 Krystallnacht, or "Night of Broken Glass," and along with her mother and her younger brothers narrowly escaped death several times.

Students raised money to donate to the Rose Beal Legacy Garden at the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial.  The Memorial is one of 11 sites in the United States to be awarded a sapling from the stately Chestnut tree that stood outside Anne Frank's secret annex in Amsterdam.

Student Leadership Provides Community Service

Bellevue Elementary students continued a seven year tradition with their annual three-mile trash pick-up along the bike path from Power Engineers to the south of Bellevue and through the streets of Bellevue.  Over 100 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students were accompanied by teachers and parents from Bellevue Elementary.  The trash pick-up, organized by Bellevue teacher Krista Jones, is part of the College Aspirations Project.  Prior to the trash pick-up, the Environmental Resource Center spoke to the students.
