Blaine County School District Saves with Energy Efficiency

Idaho Power representatives recognized the Blaine County School District for its commitment to energy efficiency in building upgrades during a presentation to the Board of Trustees at the regular May meeting.

According to Idaho Power, the district took advantage of Idaho Power's Building Efficiency Program to make significant improvements in eight buildings. Improvements that qualified for the Building Efficiency rebate program included reduced interior light load, addition of occupancy sensors, efficient exit signs, efficient HVAC units, energy management control systems, demand control ventilation and variable speed drives.

Staff Engagement Survey Launches

The Blaine County School District launched a Staff Engagement Survey asking all staff to provide feedback on overall engagement, shared values, leadership, communication, recognition, work environment, career growth and training.

The survey was developed jointly with district administration and the Blaine County Education Association.  The survey is administered by K12 Insight, a technology-based research and communications firm, in order to ensure that all responses are kept confidential.

Interim Superintendent John Blackman said, "The results of the Staff Engagement Survey will be an opportunity for leadership to reflect on the ways we can improve going into the next school year.  The survey will establish base-line data points and will be given on annual basis to help identify long-term trends.  We want to assure staff that we value their feedback and need to hear from everyone in order to fully understand both our successes and our opportunities for improvement."

Overall results of the survey will be shared with the staff and public through press releases, the BCSD Weekly Update and the website.

BCSD Considers Options for Teen Parenting Center

The Blaine County School District will consider options for the Teen Parenting Center and welcomes community input.  The Teen Parenting Center opened three years ago and is located adjacent to Silver Creek High School.  Parents who are enrolled in Silver Creek High School or Wood River High School access the daycare.  They are also required to participate in parenting classes, such as the recent car seat safety class.

The state provides partial reimbursement for daycare based on financial need.  The enrollment has varied over the course of the last three years from the maximum of six children to less in the current year.  Projections for next year are estimated to be up to four children. The district is evaluating how best to meet the needs of teen parents and also maintain fiscal responsibility.

Options include:

  • Maintaining the Teen Parenting Center as is.

  • Identifying local daycare providers within walking distance of the school and paying for their service while also contracting for teen parenting classes.

  • Inviting CSI students and Community Campus employees to access the services of the Teen Parenting Center daycare for a fee.

The Board will consider these options at the regular meeting on Tuesday, June 10.  Interim Superintendent John Blackman said, "We have an obligation and an interest in helping teen parents stay in school.  Providing access to daycare and to parenting classes is part of the requirement for accreditation for an alternative school."

The public is welcome to email the Board or make public comment at the June Board meeting.
