Latin Students Excel in National Latin Exam
Wood River High School students excelled in this year's National Latin Exam.  Over 154,000 students from 49 states and 17 foreign countries took the exam.  According to the National Latin Exam Committee, "such participation attests to your encouragement of academic excellence and to the efforts of your Latin students themselves."

Latin teacher Jane Ulrich said, "This year seven of the Latin I students scored high enough to earn medals and certificates.  At the Cum Laude level the students are:  Kristian Whittaker, Carlos Gonzalez, and Amanda Passey.  At the Magna Cum Laude level:  Evan Telford, Cade Schott and Xavier Haemmerle.  At the Maxima Cum Laude is Laurel Gaeddert, who also receives a silver medal."

Students Engage in Hands-On Learning Through Arts Residency

Woodside Elementary and Carey School teachers Joni Cashman and Jennifer Mecham collaborated on a week-long artist residency through the Idaho Commission on the Arts this year.  Students learned how traditional arts create a sense of identity through working with traditional leather artist Deanna Atteberry.  This multi-disciplinary program incorporated Language Arts, Visual Arts and Social Studies.  While the residency itself lasted one week, the impact of the project continued throughout the school year.

Students Receive Nutrition Boost During Testing

Students at Wood River Middle School received a nutritional boost before taking the SBAC field test, thanks to the Idaho Dairy Council and United Dairymen of Idaho.  For the third consecutive year, the Idaho Dairy Council provided string cheese to each student for each test.

Technology paraprofessional Catherine Fieguth applied to the program and said that the cheese makes all the difference for the students, "The students really love getting the cheese sticks.  It helps them realize that we care about their test performance. We understand that some students come to school without having any breakfast or they skip lunch and this is just a small way of making sure they have a little something to help them on their exams."

Nominate a Student For Doing the Right Thing

The City of Hailey Fire and Police Departments, together with the Blaine County School District, are launching a new program called

Do The Right Thing.

The program is designed to reinforce positive behavior among youth in the community.  Founded in Miami, Florida, the program spread nationwide and now recognizes thousands of youth each month for positive behavior.  The newest chapter of Do The Right Thing in Hailey, Idaho is the first in Idaho.

The program is accepting nominations on the City of Hailey website.  The nomination is easy to fill out and only takes a few minutes. The deadline to apply is Thursday, May 19.  Any student from any school in Blaine County can be nominated.

Nominations can come from anyone in the community for a child who lives anywhere in Blaine County.  "Youth can do the right thing both inside of school and outside of school.  We want to involve everyone in the effort to recognize youth for doing the right thing," said Hailey Fire Chief Aberbach.
