Local Chefs Visit Schools

Local chef Chris Kastner of CK's Restaurant in Hailey was at Bellevue Elementary recently as part of the Chartwell's Chefs2Schools program.

Kastner made hummus and spoke to the students about the nutritious ingredients.  Look for more Chef2School programs coming soon.  And, if you are a chef interested in sharing your talents with local school children, please contact Food Services Director Duane Sorensen.

Hailey Students Head to the Polls

Hailey Elementary students headed to the polls to vote for their favorite names for the new playground trees. It was a great exercise in citizenship.  Students even had the chance to use real voting ballots and booths, thanks to the efforts of the Hailey PTA.  The trees were named, Eleanor, Olaf, Cinnamon, and Pancake.  Students campaigned for Eleanor, named after Ms. Reali's deceased dog.

The project taught students about citizenship and will result in long-term investment in the health of the trees due to the student involvement.

How Much is Too Much Screen Time?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents:
  • limit entertainment screen time to 2 hours

  • discourage media exposure for children under 2

  • keep TV and media devices out of the bedroom

  • monitor children's Internet usage

  • view media together and use it to discuss values

  • enforce mealtime and bedtime curfews for media devices

It is important for kids to spend time on outdoor play, reading, hobbies, and using their imaginations in free play.

For more information about parenting in the digital age, see this presentation that Technology Director Tim Rocco gave to the Hemingway Parents Auxiliary recently.  Or attend a Parent Tech Class, starting tonight, Monday, February 24.

Budget Presentation Recap - Part 1

The first in a series of five public budget meetings occurred last week.  Business Manager Mike Chatterton (pictured right) reviewed the past financial history of the district and discussed future funding as part of a look at future staffing and reallocation requests considered for fiscal year 2015.

Over the past seven years, the revenue for the General Fund has decreased by $1.8 million.  When the largest source of revenue was capped, the district began a more conservative fiscal approach, including reducing the number of new staff hired each year and reducing annual salary increases.

Business Manager Mike Chatterton recommends the district continue this conservative approach for the future while maintaining the current level of services and programs for students.  The Blaine County School District acknowledges and appreciates the tremendous support from the community that allows for financial stability of the district.  To read the full presentation, click here.
