Hemingway Recycling Club Engaged in Real World Learning
The fifth grade recycling club at Hemingway Elementary is engaged in real world learning. The students are writing public service announcements about various aspects of recycling in Blaine County and researching locations for a glass recycling container in Ketchum.
The public service announcements will be played on KECH and KSKI starting in October. The students are also working with the City of Ketchum to find a spot in Ketchum to place a container to collect glass.
Joyce Allgaier, Ketchum City Planner, met with the students to look at aerial photos of Ketchum and learn how city hall works. The students will then use the photos to pick suitable places and present those to the planning department which will work with the students to narrow the choices. After that, the students will present to the Ketchum City Council. The recycling club adviser is Scott Slonim.

Your Idaho Core Weekly Tip
In Blaine County, we're using the new Idaho Core Standards to ensure students graduate from high school prepared to succeed in college or their chosen career. The Idaho Core provides focus and clarity so everyone - parents, educators and students - understands what is expected of them.
The standards challenge students to read critically, write extensively and solve real-world math problems at greater capacity. We're excited to see the Idaho Core raise the bar for all students and increase the rigor of education in Blaine County.
