Hands-On Learning in an Outdoor Classroom

The Wood River Middle School Residential Outdoor Environmental School is unique in the state of Idaho. Wood River Middle School teachers plan, produce, and teach a series of lessons based on field science, wilderness survival and global awareness that incorporate language arts, social studies, science and math. Students of all abilities spend the night at camp and experience hands-on learning. KMVT featured the program on the evening news last week.

Apples from Idaho's Bounty Served in Schools

20 cases of Golden Delicious apples from Kelley's Canyon Orchard were delivered to the schools last week. The apples were ordered through Idaho's Bounty and will be served at the salad bars at each school. Kelley's Canyon Orchard is located in the Snake River Canyon north of Filer. Five generations of the Kelley family operate more than 80 acres of orchard that produces cherries, apricots, peaches, pears, nectarines, plums and apples.

Hemingway Recycling Club Engaged in Real World Learning

The fifth grade recycling club at Hemingway Elementary is engaged in real world learning. The students are writing public service announcements about various aspects of recycling in Blaine County and researching locations for a glass recycling container in Ketchum.

The public service announcements will be played on KECH and KSKI starting in October.   The students are also working with the City of Ketchum to find a spot in Ketchum to place a container to collect glass.

Joyce Allgaier, Ketchum City Planner, met with the students to look at aerial photos of Ketchum and learn how city hall works.  The students will then use the photos to pick suitable places and present those to the planning department which will work with the students to narrow the choices. After that, the students will present to the Ketchum City Council.  The recycling club adviser is Scott Slonim.

Your Idaho Core Weekly Tip

In Blaine County, we're using the new Idaho Core Standards to ensure students graduate from high school prepared to succeed in college or their chosen career. The Idaho Core provides focus and clarity so everyone - parents, educators and students - understands what is expected of them.

The standards challenge students to read critically, write extensively and solve real-world math problems at greater capacity. We're excited to see the Idaho Core raise the bar for all students and increase the rigor of education in Blaine County.

Get the Facts About Head Lice

There are three reported cases of head lice in the Blaine County School District. Here are a few facts for staff and parents.

  • An estimated 6 to 12 million infestations occur each year among U.S. children 3 to 11 years of age.
  • Head lice often infest people with good hygiene.
  • Head lice move by crawling; they cannot jump or fly.
  • Head lice do not transmit disease, but they do spread easily.
  • If you or your child exhibits signs of an infestation, it is important to talk to your doctor to learn about treatment options.
