Students Increase Learning Time with Chromebooks

Students Using Chromebooks

Students in grades 3-12 at Carey School are increasing learning time and engagement through a pilot of Chromebooks 1:1.  Chromebooks are affordable laptops that support Google Chrome and Google Apps for Education. Students and staff are already discussing the impact on learning.  "People are excited about the possibilities," said Principal John Peck.

Students Celebrate Constitution Day
September 17th

According to the Idaho State Department of Education, in 2004, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 108-447, Section 111(b) requiring that "each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year shall hold an educational program on the United States Constitution on September 17 of such year for the students served by the educational institution."

Idaho's legislators throughout the years have recognized the importance of understanding the United States Constitution as a living document and its impact on our everyday lives by adopting Idaho Code  33-1602, "instruction in the Constitution of the United States shall be given in all elementary and secondary schools."  Additionally, Idaho Code 73-108B identifies that, "September 17 shall be designated as constitutional commemorative day."

As a result, all local education agencies receiving federal funds must teach about the U.S. Constitution on September 17th of each year.

Idaho Core Standards

In the Blaine County School District, our goal is to help our students succeed. To reach that goal, our schools are teaching to a new set of standards called the Idaho Core Standards.  Our teachers use curriculum to help students meet those learning standards. So what is the difference between curriculum and standards?

Consider it like this:

  •  Standards are expectations. Sample expectation: students will know that 2+2=4 and understand why the equation works.
  • Curriculum is a set of materials. Our teachers use curriculum to prepare students to learn that 2+2 =4 and to understand why the equation works.

Standards are important for our students, educators and state. Standards help ensure every child in Idaho, regardless of where they live, is learning the information necessary to succeed in future grades, college, careers and life.

Splash Park Opens

The Hemingway Splash Park opened this week.  The project was funded by the City of Ketchum.  The Blaine County School District Board of Trustees gave permission last year for the Splash Park to be installed on school grounds at Hemingway Elementary.  It is another great example of the school district's ongoing partnership with the City of Ketchum.  Thank you to everyone for making this happen for the children in our community.

Volunteers are needed to assist students in the I Have a Dream program.  The program is designed to encourage students to graduate from high school and attend college.

Students need help with their English and Spanish school work during an after school program from 2:30 to 4:00 PM each day at Woodside Elementary.  The program will begin the week of September 16th and will continue throughout the school year. If you are able to offer any time for volunteering, please contact Kelly Ortego at (208)215-5528 or [email protected].

The Board of Trustees heard accolades for several staff members and departments this week.  Several accolades focused on the efforts of staff to assist the Red Cross and Salvation Army during the Beaver Creek Fire.

Roger Hinton with South Central Red Cross of Greater Idaho wrote,

"I have had the privilege of serving on several Red Cross operations ranging from local events to the disaster relief effort for Hurricane Sandy in New York City last year and have never experienced the level of support offered by your staff at the Community Campus. This includes the staff of the Blaine Recreation District and CSI. From the staff who volunteered to spend the night with us after working their shift to the couple who found towels for the evacuees to use for showers, THANK YOU!"
