Students Excel in World Languages
Congratulations to several Dual Immersion 8th grade students (pictured above with teacher Jorge Pulliero) from Wood River Middle School who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2013 National Spanish Exams.
Thirty-six students took the National Spanish Exam and twenty-six of them earned national recognition. Students earned a total of 6 gold (95% or higher), 9 silver (85-94%), and 1 bronze medal (75-84%) along with 10 honorable mentions.
"Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of the Exams, "because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 156,000 students participating in 2013." Wood River Middle School students were the only ones representing the state of Idaho.

Carey Students Read 80 Million Words
Students in grades K-6 at Carey School reached their goal of reading 80 million words.
Carey School has been working with staff and students in grades K-6 to track how many words the students read in one school year. The school goal was part of an effort to inspire students to read independently. The program tracks Accelerated Reader books and tests, used as a motivational tool for independent reading. "Research tells us that students need to read independently in order to compete globally. We are trying to develop good habits and encourage students to read a wide cross-section of fiction and non-fiction. Some students are so interested in reading that they are motivated to read even whether or not it's an AR book," said Milynda Carlson.

Meet Edwin Garcia
Read about Edwin Garcia in Sun Valley Magazine's 360 Kids
Age: 17 School: Senior at Wood River High School Siblings: Younger sister Natalie, 13 Pets: Kobe the Cockatiel Role: Camp Counselor
Edwin Garcia believes that "anyone can help anybody at anytime, no matter how big the issue." When he was in 6th grade, Edwin attended the Blaine County School District's Environmental Camp and it had such a positive impact on his life that he decided to pay it back (and forward) by being a counselor there during his junior and senior years. It's hard not to notice Edwin's patient and caring nature.
