Who grew the best crops this year at Addison County Field Days?

Answer : 


The Field Days Crop Exhibit was full of fantastic field and forage crops this year!   Dry hay was at almost triple the entries from last year, and we even saw 10 soybean (plant) entries.

There were LOTS of blue ribbon winning entries in all twelve categories, but here are the Best of Class entries for 2014

The UVM Extension Champlain Valley Crop, Soil and Pasture Team, Middlebury NRCS and the Vorsteveld Family Farm will host a hands on Soil Health/No-till/Cover Crop Workshop in Panton, VT on August 29.   

 

Joel Myers, a No-Till Consultant and retired NRCS State Agronomist in Pennsylvania will share his knowledge of practical no-till approaches, including challenging soil conditions and how to utilize dairy manure in no-till systems.   

 

This event is FREE for farmers and includes lunch with pre-registration.   

 

JOIN US IN THE FIELD FOR:

  • Soil Pits...Get up close and look at what clay soils look like under different types of management and how farming practices can improve soil health
  • Cover Crop Plots...Take a look at 8 different cover crop mixes planted side by side
  • Take a look at the latest tools & equipment farmers are using to reduce tillage, incorporate manure and
  • No-Till Planting & Manure Injection in Action
  • See soil health in action...a rainfall simulator will be set up to show you how healthy soils function both above and below ground.
  • Talk toother farmers and local service providers about what they are doing this year and beyond to improve healthy soil function and grow better crops.

PEST MANAGEMENT FOR FIELD CROPS
A Workshop from Ben & Jerry's Caring Dairy




Control insect pest damage in your field crops:  from corn rootworm to armyworm, clover root curculio and more.  Learn ways to reduce production costs when it comes to insect pests.  We're welcoming Kitty O'Neil from Cornell to share info on IPM and pest management.  She will join UVM Extension's Jeff Carter, Heather Darby and Dan Hudson in these workshops.


The workshops will be held in 3 locations. 
Lunch or dinner will be served.
  • Wednesday, August 20th  |  10:30 to 1:30  at Derrick Dykstra's Farm 2165 Pearson Road, New Haven
  • Wednesday, August 20th  |  5:30 to 8:00 pm at Poulin Grain's Conference room  |  24 Railroad Square, Newport
