Kimpton Hotels:

Red Ribbon Party at Hotel Monaco

Each year, Kimpton Hotels across the country work with local AIDS Service Organizations to produce an event on World AIDS Day to help raise funds for the fight against HIV/AIDS. In Portland, this event is called The Red Ribbon Party and will raise upwards of $10,000.

Join us on December 1st, from 7pm - 10pm at Hotel Monaco, SW 5th at Washington, for Drag Queen Bingo (hosted by Bolivia Carmichaels), Live Auction (travel-oriented packages), Raffle (swanky travel items) and signature cocktails. This event is free to attend, but it is a fundraiser so come prepared to party and give. There will be Red-Ribbon-Clad models on hand selling raffle and drink tickets.

The site has resources for schools and parents, as well as a calendar where anyone can post an event.  Check it out!

As a part of this collaboration, billboards and other materials were created to get the word out about this honored day. Getting to Zero is the theme, getting you to know your status is our goal!

CAP offers several options to get tested for HIV locally: Cascade AIDS Project office, Pivot (for men who have sex with men only), CHATroom for youth, plus testing sites in Beaverton, Clackamas County, and Clark County. Click here for details and additional options. Live outside the area? Our Oregon AIDS/STD Hotline database can help you find resources closer to home.

What Can You Do to End AIDS?

As of yet, there's no cure for HIV. However, through new research released by the National Institutes of Health in May, 2011, we have learned that early treatment for those who are HIV-infected not only ensures a healthier life for them, but reduces the likelihood of transmission of HIV to their sexual contacts by 96%.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently reported that for every HIV infection prevented, an estimated $355,000 is saved in the cost of providing lifetime HIV treatment. If the estimated 1,283 Oregonians today who are HIV-positive and don't know it were tested, and if they were then linked to care and early treatment, Oregon's rate of new HIV infections could be slashed by more than 1,000 cases over the next five years alone. Those 1,000-plus cases averted translates to a savings of greater than $355 million in health care costs avoided. So here is what you can do to end AIDS:

  • Get tested every 6 months if you are age 13-64, as recommended by the CDC.  Ask your doctor for a test or contact any of the providers on this list.
  • If you are positive, get into treatment. Early treatment means better health and a better future.
  • Donate to the cause. If you want to see an end to HIV/AIDS, organizations like CAP need the resources to do our part. Testing services, education and outreach needs outstrip the resources available. Your gift will make an immediate difference. You can give by going to our web site and clicking the donate button or by sending a check to Cascade AIDS Project, 208 SW 5th, Suite 800, Portland OR, 97204.
