Kids' Connection Holiday Family Match
| |
Looking for a fun and rewarding way to make a difference this holiday season? Join our Kids' Connection Holiday Family Match program as a donor, and help brighten the holidays for some amazing children!
Kids' Connection provides year-round HIV-specific support to children, youth and families who are impacted by HIV. Many Kids' Connection families struggle throughout the year with poverty, and being able to provide beyond basic needs during the holiday season is difficult. Our Holiday Family Match program will support the children and youth enrolled in our Kids' Connection program by matching them with donors to provide fun and practical presents. This is a great way to add some holiday cheer to the life of a child impacted by HIV this holiday season.
To become a donor or for more information, please contact Bekah Telew, Holiday Family Match Volunteer at 503-278-3878 by November 21st. Click here to learn more about Kids' Connection. Happy Holidays!

New Prevention Staff & HIV Testing
| |
Did you know Cascade AIDS Project offers HIV testing services not just in Portland, but across
 | | Boone & Jaxon |
the metro area? Walk-in testing is available at a wide variety of locations in Clackamas and Washington counties, as well as Clark County in Washington. Two new staff have recently joined the Prevention Services team to work specifically with our HIV testing and outreach efforts in Clackamas and Washington counties.
Jaxon Mitchell is our new HIV Prevention Specialist. Jaxon brings a wealth of previous experience in community organizing and HIV prevention including HIV testing, as well as experience with behavioral prevention interventions and program evaluation from his previous employer, AIDS Services of Austin, and his work with a local chapter of ACT-UP. He most recently worked for Ecology Action of Texas.
Boone Kizer is our new Bilingual (English-Spanish) HIV Prevention Specialist. Boone comes to CAP from Denver, Colorado where he has volunteered doing HIV testing and outreach with gay/bi men and people who inject drugs through Boulder County AIDS Project. For the past several years he worked with Dental Lifeline Network coordinating a mobile dental program, which provides dental services to those with access and mobility issues. In addition to his work at CAP, he is also pursuing a master's degree in non-profit management.
Welcome to Portland and CAP, Jaxon and Boone!

Mental Health Peer Support
|
 | | CAP's Peer Support Specialists |
Cascade AIDS Project has hired three certified Peer Support Specialists to kick off our new Mental Health Peer Support Program! In September, CAP partnered with the Oregon Health Authority and Project ABLE Oregon to provide a 5-day training to twelve individuals via a state-approved curriculum. The training was offered to any HIV-positive individuals who have experienced mental health issues in the past, and wanted to use their life experience to offer support to other HIV-positive individuals who may be struggling with mental health issues. Of the twelve trained, CAP is excited to announce that Jace Richard, Gloria Ramirez, and Frankie Fontana have all accepted part-time positions with CAP and started working with the Housing and Support Services Department on October 31.
These three new staff members receive referrals from CAP Housing Case Managers and CareLink staff, Medical Case Managers, and community partners to provide Peer Support and mentorship to many of our clients experiencing serious mental health and substance abuse issues, helping connect them to appropriate care, social supports, and reduce isolation. They each bring unique life experiences, skills, and qualifications to these positions that will greatly enhance the level of care and services we can provide to our clients! We are thrilled to be able to introduce this new program to CAP and wish Jace, Gloria, and Frankie all the best in their new roles!

HOPWA Getting to Work Initiative
|
Last November, Cascade AIDS Project was one of nine AIDS Service Organizations selected nationally to participate in the HOPWA Getting To Work Initiative. Offered jointly by HOPWA National Technical Assistance providers Building Changes and Victory Programs, Inc., Getting to Work is a capacity building initiative that focuses on increasing access to vocational services and employment for HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS) program participants. This technical assistance was the perfect match for CAP's Working Choices.
CAP staff worked with the GTW team on five major areas: becoming more financially self-sufficient, making our program more effective with regard to the number of participants and employment outcomes, providing better career guidance and vocational support to clients in transition, strengthening community partnerships and identifying new ones, and providing better benefit guidance to clients receiving social security. Over the past year, the Getting To Work Initiative has given Working Choices access to an incredible amount of tools and resources. This technical assistance has been presented in a variety of forms, including: monthly consultation phone calls, webinars, access to data, studies and other program models, sample forms, and most of all, a collaborative forum to share challenges and successes.
All of this support has significantly increased the level of success in Working Choices by teaching us how to run a more efficient and effective program. The value gained by being a part of the Getting To Work Initiative is beyond anything we expected, and we have increased capacity in all of the areas we identified as priorities! We are thankful for the opportunity to participate in the Getting To Work Initiative. If you would like to know more about this initiative or have questions about capacity building, please feel free to contact Heather Salek.

Leaving a Legacy
| |
"I have spent over 20 years in the fight against AIDS -- as a donor, advisor and leader. It gives me confidence and purpose to know I can still be a part of the fight against HIV/AIDS even after I am gone." - Terry Bean.
The fight against HIV/AIDS has been pushing forward since the early '80s. Much progress has been made to make living with HIV easier through medications and more. Still, new HIV infections have not gone down in more than a decade, and new infections means new folks needing care.
Cascade AIDS Project has been a part of this fight since 1983 and has been able to be at the forefront on policy and care because of gifts from people like you. Being a part of the HIV/AIDS fight is an honor and a privilege. Continuing the fight after one has passed through planned giving in the form of bequests is admirable. We invite you to join Terry and others in the fight by adding CAP to your will and other estate planning. Because this is such a lasting way to give, CAP has created a Legacy Society, a group honored for their inclusion of CAP in their will or other planning. We honor those in the Society by offering:
- Listing as a member of the Legacy Society on
- "Plaque" in the CAP offices
- Webpage
- Section of the annual report
- Art Auction Catalogue as a call-out
- CAP Legacy Society presented at a pinning ceremony
- Invitation to the AIDS Walk VIP Breakfast
- Invitation to all VIP events associated with Art Auction
- Invitation to annual Legacy Society Cocktail hour (usually in January or February)
We thank those who are current members and invite you to join them. Members of CAP's Legacy Society are:
- Laura Bancroft
- Kathy Behrend*
- Terry Bean
- Frank Biesinger, Jr.*
- Dave Eckert
- Robbie Sherwin
- Charles Washington
- Foy Renfro
- Kathyn Vaughn
* deceased
