Review by Barb Van Hoff:
This just released book is a wonderful read for anyone with an interest in children with developmental needs, an interest in recent history, an interest in local history, or just an interest in how to dream big and accomplish goals.
Do not let the subtitle fool you. All Children Matter is an easy read with personal stories of children who were helped, the founding members and their dreams, and the early workers who continued to work with, and advocate for, these children.
Interspersed throughout the book are charming pictures and quotes that bring the story to life. Spanning several decades, this book tells of the challenges of recognizing these children as members of society in general, and specifically of their local communities. The challenges of giving them the opportunity to learn and be educated in a culture where the school systems were not only not able to accommodate them, but really had no idea how best to meet their needs. In a time when many people may have given up, this group of people stepped up. They became educated in ways that could help severely disabled children learn, and they went about setting up a place where this could be implemented. Then they set up another place, and another. One of the wonderful parts of their plan was the way they involved the whole community in helping these children. People became invested, not only in the program, but in the children.
I literally could not put this book down, I read it in one sitting.
