At the Top of Suicide 6 Jessica and Erin get ready for the Bi-Ski Competition

Greetings!
Happy Spring from everyone at Zack's Place. As usual we have a lot of wonderful happenings to look forward to! We hope that you can be a part of some or all of our upcoming events!

Special Olympics Weekend at Suicide 6

Zack's Place was proud to compete in the Unified Special Olympics Snowshoe Competition as well as competing for the first time in the Skiing, Snowboarding and Snowshoeing on Saturday. We began training for both competitions in December of 2012.

Every week this winter 15 volunteers from Woodstock Union High School practiced with snowshoe athletes for the upcoming Olympics. The practices were held on the Green which involved relays, time trials and endurance practices. Team meetings which discussed sportsmanship, healthy athleticism, teamwork, and positive reinforcement were held weekly as well. The Snowshoe Team competed on March 8th and brought home many medals and more importantly self confidence, bonds of friendship and satisfaction of a job well done.

The first Zack's Place Special Olympics Ski-Team, has worked hard to be a part of the games this year. Suicide 6 generously hosted Zack's Place each week this winter offering free skiing and rentals to our participants. Ottauquechee Health Foundation awarded Zack's Place a grant to pay for the fees for using Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sport(VASS). Each week volunteers from VASS  partnered with skiers from ZP. The results were incredible. Participants had a great time on the slopes. They enjoyed this winter sport and were exhilarated by the opportunity to go fast down the mountain. At the end of the season 7 athletes successfully participated in the ski and snowboard competition. Zack's Place had two athletes compete in the Bi-ski competition!
