January 22, 2015
We ended 2014 by entertaining the crowd--outside in the frigid air of Market Square--by hosting First NightŪ Portsmouth's musical block party. DJ Primo shares impressions and images of that evening.
We have new show information to share again this month, as well as a name change for one of our long-time programs and some special January/February programming, not to miss!
February is RPM Challenge Month, so check out what The Uncle Phil Show has in store.
The coming months will bring more updates and highlights as we continually embrace our presence in the community.

New Year's Eve 2014 - Portsmouth Community Radio Rocked The Night!
|
|
DJ Primo, aka Rico, shares his New Year's Eve experience as one of WSCA's hosts in Market Square:
"WSCA and Pro Portsmouth found all of us a bit leery due to the cold snap as we started the evening. Temperatures hit 5 degrees at one point that night.
DJs M, Rick, and Darryl all showed up early to set up equipment, power and get us live by 5:00 p.m.

WSCA 106.1 FM New Year's Eve Market Square DJ broadcast booth
|
Excitement was in the crisp air and people were psyched to have music playing. 5:00 p.m. brought an anticipation of optimism and fun, as well as darkness. Kids lined up around the booth, letting us know they would not be left out. Children aged 3 to 16 lit up the street with their dance moves while parents watched in awe. The lights from the lasers kept them all entertained.
DJ M took us to 7:30, which was kick-off time for the fireworks. Darryl handled the transition between music. You could see the awesome fireworks from the street, as they rose above the buildings.
 | | Dancin' in the street all night long ... | At 8:30 I took the reign's and brought a happy blend of new age dance music and electronic dance music to the youth of Portsmouth.
As it got closer to midnight, a growing crowd filled the streets. By 11:30 Market Square was filled with throngs of people. Darryl and I counted down the last 30 seconds of 2014 'til the street exploded with cheer for the new year ... roaring 2015 to life."
They all had a great time representing WSCA, bringing joy to our listeners while helping our community celebrate. It's worth noting that the frigid temps were just a teeny slice of his story. Our DJs had lots of fun, despite the cold! And it showed.

The Burt Cohen Show is now Keeping Democracy Alive
|
First it was Portside, meaning the left side of the aisle, but too many thought it was about the Port of New Hampshire. For many years it has been The Burt Cohen Show, but it was time for a clarification--a re-branding. So now, with creative help from Rick Pickford and Rick Dirck, The Burt Cohen Show is Keeping Democracy Alive with Burt Cohen.
This much more clearly identifies what the show is all about, and ties in the interviews from current activists to writers of new history books!
And don't forget that Fine Aged Rock is going full steam ahead every Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to noon with Burt Cohen and John Walker. All artists broadcast on this show must be fifty or older, or would have been had they lived. And they must rock!

Scratchy 45s and Beyond - From A to Z
Saturdays at 9:00 a.m., hosted by Supersport
|
What recently began as a single-show Scratchy 45s special has turned into a weekly treat. At least for a while. It all started when Scratchy 45s & Beyond host, The Supersport, thought it would be a great end of the year treat if he allowed listeners to hear a sampling of the vinyl albums he personally owns and enjoys. So he'd pull out and spin one vinyl album from each artist, alphabetically. Supersport refers to it as a gift to his listeners, who support the show and WSCA. And the response has been outstanding, he reports. Listeners have requested to keep it going, finding it provides fun and insight into the "gems" of his vinyl library. Supersport says he will continue this A to Z treat for awhile and begin to add his own 45's into the mix as well. One listener commented, "You have some awesome rarities and quite the selection!" You are now able to watch a live webcast of the show at: http://vaughnlive.tv/thesupersport every Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Chat live with others viewing the show using the chat forum. Supersport notes that so far we have viewers and chats from as far away as Florida, Massachusetts, Australia, Florida, western New Hampshire, Indiana, New York and the UK. He sends out a special thank you to all those interacting and supporting the show over the past 5 years!
