October 23, 2014

A big thank you to all who participated in this month's Portsmouth Community Radio Membership Drive. Current members, new members and all those who volunteered their time and talents are enormously appreciated. Music Marathon Sunday filled the airwaves with hours and hours of fantastic live, in-studio performances.

October always finds the New Hampshire Film Festival in Portsmouth and several DJs conducted a number of filmmaker interviews, enabling them to get the news out about their films to the wider community. Maybe you attended some of them.

Check out the updated programming schedule online as well as more detailed descriptions below. There may be one or two shows you have not yet discovered.

And again, WSCA Systems Administrator Steve Diamond continues to update us on the technical side of WSCA.

True Tales Radio, Tuesday, October 28, Listen Live
True Tales Radio is broadcast on the last Tuesday of each month as part of WSCA Audio Theater. Each month local community members are invited to tell their "true tales" connected to our monthly themes. Our first broadcast was in January of 2014 and to-date we have had 50 different storytellers participating and approximately 150 in-studio audience members. Consider this your invitation to be a storyteller on True Tales Radio. It is a lot of fun.

  True Tales Radio

Announcer: Amy Antonucci
Emcee: Pat Spalding
Producer: John Lovering

October's theme, "The Masks We Wear Every Day," is very broad in scope: Scaring and being scared, Halloween stories, Costumes. Six storytellers will step up to the microphone beginning at 6:30 p.m. to tell their "true tales." Join our in-studio audience or listen on the radio or online.

November's theme is Gratitude and December is Endings. For more information email truetales@wscafm.org or like us on Facebook.

Under the Radar--Big Band Mondays, Tune In Nov. 3

Seacoast's only Big Band show Under the Radar--Big Band Mondays airs the first Monday of each month from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Since February 2010, host Steve S. has been playing the hits, near misses and any and all types of big band music from one of the greatest eras in American music.

On Monday, November 3, a special show is planned. You'll not only get a taste of the big band songs Steve likes to play, but special guest Steve Dunfey will be alongside, playing some of his favorite big band songs. Dunfey earned the privilege during WSCA's recent membership drive, when he met the donation requirement for this special premium. Listeners should be prepared for a double-barrel shot of big band swing music from both hosts. You'll  surely be tapping your toes for a solid two hours!

Free form and swinging--just two hosts sharing their favorites, including tidbits along the way. You'll hear from the "greats" like Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw and Bob Crosby, and some of the "not-so-greats," such as Tiny Hill and Art Kassel and his Kassel in the Sky Orchestra.

Steve says to jump-jive and wail with the big bands on the first Monday of each month. And circle November 3, with his special guest host.

Requests can be emailed. Remember, "Steve, loves you madly."

Technical Tidings

By Steve Diamond, WSCA Systems Administrator

This past month I had a lot to do with our membership drive, but activities also pro
gressed in three challengingSteve Diamond, Systems Administrator areas:  the antenna location, the website and organizing equipment and spare parts. I'm thrilled to report that the FCC finally gave approval for us to move the antenna, due to the tenacious efforts of Rick Pickford. Other final approvals will hopefully come through soon, enabling us to complete the move and boost our coverage area before the snow flies.

The website transition has seen progress, but a few of the dozen remaining details are going to be more difficult than I had hoped. Some of the elements are in motion--such as new posts being added--and some of the features of the current site are a bit involved to re-create, such as the listing of Public Affairs shows. If anyone has website development experience (particularly if it involves wordpress and PHP programming) and is willing to help get everything gracefully migrated and operational, please do let me know. Email sdiamond@wscafm.org. The right volunteer could really speed things up, helping to finish it sooner. I believe final corrections on the automatic podcast feeds are done and will become public quite soon.

Lastly, I set up shelving in the back room and got the various electronic parts in better order. So, hopefully the right parts will be readily found. Please do whatever you can when at the station to keep things organized.
