August 21, 2014
So many things begin anew as we start to transition from summertime to fall. When it is September around Portsmouth Community Radio, it is birthday time! As we come into our tenth year of awesome programming with fantastic volunteers--hosting and behind-the-scenes--and a community that embraces WSCA, you can be sure we'll be celebrating. One way you can catch some of the anniversary fun is by tuning in to a special True Tales Radio on September 9, featuring many storytellers sharing short snippets relating to experiences at the station over the past ten years. Some "yikes" moments, for certain. What else is ten years old in your life? Is it passing by quickly or slowly? Check out all the offerings below. Some noteworthy programming changes can be found.

On Friday, August 22, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Portsmouth Community Radio will air a special show featuring Chuck Curtis, host of The Laugh Factory, interviewing local hypnotist Sherry Ricard. | | Sherry Ricard |
Sherry Ricard is also a local actress and comedian and will surely touch on those topics as well.
The interview will primarily focus on hypnotherapy, and thus will be a serious discussion, covering common questions received, as well as fears and doubts that may exist.
Chuck can also be heard on his weekly show, The Laugh Factory, on Sundays from noon to 1:00 p.m.
|

Celebrating WSCAs Anniversary in True Tales Radio Style, September 9 at 6:00 pm.
|
Portsmouth Community Radio went on the air for the first time at 7:00 p.m. on September 12, 2004. This September 9, we will celebrate our 10th anniversary with a special True Tales Radio Show from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sixteen present and former DJs, Show Hosts, Trustees, Engineers, and other Volunteers will share stories about the history of WSCA-LP, from the origin of the station through the construction and daily operation of the seacoast region's first Low Power FM station. Tune in and hear true stories from the people who experienced them ... favorite shows, most embarrassing moments, special guests, bloopers, moments of pride for what we have accomplished in the past 10 years, with special thanks to our underwriters, members, and volunteers. We will also hear some memorable and emotional stories of station members who dedicated so much to the station, but sadly are no longer here to continue their work. It will be two hours of storytelling about Portsmouth Community Radio. Announcer Amy Antonucci and Emcee Pat Spalding will be our hosts. The show is produced by John Lovering, host of Audio Theatre. Please join us for an evening of live, on-air celebration and memories of Portsmouth Community Radio's last 10 years as your community radio station. That is Tuesday, September 9, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Listen locally at 106.1 FM, streaming live online at wscafm.org, or on mobile devices using the Tune In app.

| Under the Radar - Mondays, 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. |
Under the Radar announces a slight change to their on-air crew. The
team of "Mr. Jean" of The Eclectic Mix, and Steve, of Big Band Mondays are happy to welcome on board "Mr. Rick Dirck," head of WSCAs programming committee. They expect some really big things from Rick as he fits into the show's rotation, beginning Monday, September 8, at 8:00 p.m.
Rick will focus on local and up-and-coming bands, soloists, vocalists and musicians who would not normally be heard on those run-of-the-mill-corporate radio stations.
The team is sorry to note that the "Open Road" segment with "Mr. Frank" is stepping back from Under the Radar at this time.
The schedule is as follows: First Monday of each month: Big Band Mondays Second through Fourth Mondays: "Mr. Jean" aka "RJ" with his "Eclectic Mix" and then Rick D. with his "Up and Comers" segment.
The Under the Radar crew is always open to any and all suggestions, within reason. Just let them know at wscautr@yahoo.com.
The new Monday format is each week from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. on your premier seacoast station, WSCA 106.1 FM, located in Portsmouth's beautiful West End.

By Steve Diamond, WSCA Systems Administrator
Several notable steps forward occurred recently at WSCA. A thorough cleanup of the kitchen area now gives us more room to move and work. It also enabled completion of the "rack move" project, so that now, essentially all of the station's Information Technology infrastructure is stored in a more manageable and contained fashion in the back hallway. That required a late night with some time off the air, plus the extraordinary soldering skills of Mark S., but enabled us to shorten up and better organize some wiring. This helps avoid getting radio interference from other stations, which has happened before.
With the rack move completed, it also means there's a lot more usable space in CR-A, and less potential background noise (from computers or the EAS system). It also means that when I, or another engineer, need to work on something, we're less likely to disrupt the show that's airing. I've also recently corrected the stereo balance and volume levels of the archives and streams.
Upcoming anticipated efforts include: replacing at least one of the CR-A CD decks, tracking down the source of a very occasional internet connectivity issue and restoring my ability to power-cycle the most critical equipment remotely.
As always, please do let me know when or if you discover something not working correctly.
