This month we are celebrating five years of Scratchy 45s and Beyond with a special July 12 broadcast followed by a cookout party; we have special comedy and storytelling programming; improvements to on-air telephone call-ins; safeguarding listener privacy while adhering to music industry requirements and more.

As the summer heats up, check out some of the cool guests in July. From Portsmouth's West End, we invite you to come by the station any time.

Sit back with a refreshing ice tea or a cold one, and tune-in to 106.1 FM.
Celebrating 5 Years of Scratchy 45s and Beyond!
The Scratchy 45s and Beyond Show will celebrate 5 years of broadcasting on 106.1 WSCA-FM on July 12. John "Supersport" recalls how it all started.

"I was well aware of WSCA before the station even hit the ground. For years, I supported the
efforts of WSCA. One day in 2009--it was Good Friday actually--I had the day off from work and decided to track down the station's location, to visit. Upon entering, I was greeted by Sharon Jones, a DJ at that time. She gave me a brief tour and we walked into the Control Room (A) where "Uncle Phil" was on the air! It was an awesome Control Room, and as I looked around I realized it was time to get back to hosting a radio show, this time in Portsmouth, NH, at WSCA.

After completing all the necessary paperwork, meeting with Bjorn (former General Manager) and attending all the training sessions, I soon found myself joining "The Eggman" Friday nights at midnight. Following several training sessions, and once we both felt confident about it, I was ready to go solo.

The second week in July 2009, I was on-the-air, Saturday, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., with my very first show. I remained in that slot for a few years and when the Saturday morning slot opened (10:00 a.m. to Noon), I was granted the move. Not long after that, we expanded, kicking off with a special "The Three Hour Tour" show. Scratchy 45s and Beyond has been on the airwaves, 9:00 a.m. to Noon, every Saturday morning. It's been great fun to put together every week!
Supersport
I also enjoy interacting with listeners through phone calls, FaceBook and emails. As if the music wasn't enough fun, visits from other DJs, listeners, friends and family who drop by always add to the show when I turn on the mics! It really has been nothing but fun."

All are welcome to join us at WSCA on July 12, for a super fun Scratchy 45s and Beyond, starting at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Bar-B-Que at 12:15, rain or shine. Listeners, underwriters, members and volunteers are encouraged to drop by to help SuperSport celebrate, at 909 Islington Street in Portsmouth's West End.

"Finally," SuperSport says, "many thanks to everyone who supports the show and Portsmouth Community Radio. I hope to see you at the BBQ on July 12th!"

Technical Tidings

By Steve Diamond, WSCA Systems Administrator

This past month, Gordon Sharpless and I conducted a variety of fixes and adjustments, particularly in the main control room. This included replacing the broken guest headphone volume knobs, making various changes on the DJ computer to prepare for future moves and upgrades and improving the connection for the telephone outside of CR-A. We now also have a second telephone patch installed in CR-A, installed by Rocky Smith and recently tweaked by me. This means it's now possible to have two different phone guests on-air at the same time!

I also recently submitted our quarterly SoundExchange report. This may sound like a dry topic, but it says a lot about how the music industry has changed in recent years, and about Portsmouth Community Radio's support for local musicians and dedication to listeners' online privacy.

With the rise of Napster and other online music-sharing services, record labels started pursuing royalties from broadcasters as a new source of revenue. Facing extremely complicated and potentially expensive fees, radio stations got together to organize this to be a fixed flat-rate annual fee, and the SoundExchange program was formed.

After DJs log which songs were played, I send a selection of the live stream logs to an NPR service. They analyze what artists and labels are getting play here at WSCA relative to listenership and distribute our membership fee directly to the musicians accordingly. Thus, the more we play local artists, the more financial support they get.

And then there's the privacy question. Former Programming head Damon Thomas and I conferred in the early days of our involvement with SoundExchange about how to handle the logs we are required to submit. Sending the logs in their original form would share personally identifiable listener information, but the only other option was to process those logs ourselves.

With the support of then-engineering head Dee Hebert and another volunteer programmer, I created a strategy for us to process the logs ourselves, without ever releasing identifying information, which remains in use today. So even well before Edward Snowden broke the controversy of pervasive government eavesdropping, WSCA was doing its part to protect online privacy.
