Big News! Upgraded Antenna/Broadcast Area, At Last
|
The FCC approved an application to move our WSCA 106.1 FM antenna to a new location at Pease.
The actual date for the switchover looks to be around the first week in May, ... so "Happy May Day" to everybody! This is great news.
Board President Rick Pickford thanks all those who helped make this happen, and in such an expedited way. He notes a special acknowledgement to Burt Cohen for hooking us up at Pease, to John Lovering for documentation, Dee Hebert for engineering and help in planning, and a great appreciation for John Scavo, for his extensive dedication pursuing the application in a timely manner, his research on competitive issues, and for finding the right broadcast attorney to advise us on how we could accomplish it for less money.
Green Mountain Communications has put our transmitter shelter together and poured the concrete pad for it. We will be reaching out to folks for additional help, in order to get the physical part completed.

By Steve Diamond
I have been looking after the Information Technology needs of WSCA--from the computers to the internet connection to the phone lines--for a number of years. Beginning with this inaugural column, I intend to provide updates on the exciting technical developments taking place at Portsmouth Community Radio. Of late, there have indeed been many!
Most significantly, the station's internet connection was recently upgraded from Business DSL to broadband fiber-optic, resulting in much faster internet browsing, more reliable transfer of hourly and public-affairs archive files and much better up-time for the live stream. A big decision, requiring the signing of a multi-year contract with the provider, it is certainly paying off as we had anticipated.
With volunteer help, I've sorted through a huge amount of donated equipment, replacing obsolete computers, retaining needed parts, and sending about 500 pounds of the remains to be responsibly recycled. This has included near-universal upgrade to flatscreen displays that take up less space, reduce eye-strain and use less energy. Plans are in place to upgrade the flatscreen in the main control room CR-A, and improve USB performance for DJs. This will consolidate rack space, simplifying the IT infrastructure while eliminating glitches.
The dim, flicking lighting throughout the station has been upgraded, thanks to our Board President Rick Pickford, who is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Our disaster-preparedness has improved significantly in a variety of ways: more fully taking advantage of our automatic generator; upgraded battery backups; and engineers John Lovering and Rocky successfully working out the last kinks in our digitally-upgraded Emergency Alert System.
In addition to all of these activites, we've secured the assistance of an electrician to finally address a variety of electrical issues, large and small, throughout our space. And we have plans to completely overhaul the website within the next few months. The "Coming Attractions" section has already been updated, with public affairs DJs now posting content directly.
I encourage anyone noticing anything not functioning as intended to please let me know. Email sdiamond@wscafm.org. Stay tuned for further improvements! |
