Welcome to our first Programming Corner news update. We hope this space assists you in gaining a better understanding of what radio programming is all about. We will be sharing goals and challenges. To get started, here is a programming overview.
The programming department at WSCA is made up of volunteers charged with providing 106.1 FM listeners a compelling, artistic and educational experience. Our goal is to provide locally produced content that is relevant to the lives of Seacoast residents and the many annual visitors and businesses who identify with our city.
It is a priority to make sure our shows reach listeners' ears. In keeping up with technology's constant changes, programming must remain focused on how listeners consume radio content in the 21st century. The advent of web streams, mobile devices and on-demand listening forces us to update our equipment and software environments to keep pace with listener habits. A local WSCA producer would find it discouraging, after all of their hard work, to learn they only reached a small population.
Programming is also where local producers present ideas for specialty shows. Each show proposal moves through an approval process whereby we determine if the proposed show is bringing a new approach for listeners to engage the particular topic or subject matter. If needed, we help new producers navigate our training process, provide them with production guidance and/or help them navigate FCC regulations.
We are also the umbrella under which many other departments stand. We assist with music reporting and acquisition, scheduling, artist support, underwriting placements, live broadcasts, pledge drives, public service announcements and a myriad of other tasks comprising a standard broadcast day. It sounds complicated, and could not be done without the many volunteers who make up the engineering, development, facilities, membership, accounting and other departments. Programming works because of the combined efforts of all our volunteers.
In future articles, we will discuss topics and issues that we are continually focusing on, in order to ensure we serve listeners by delivering the issues, arts and information in ways not found on commercial stations.

| Live Sports Broadcasting a Big Success |
|
Portsmouth High School varsity basketball games--both Girls' and Boys' teams--were broadcast on WSCA for the second year in a row. A total of eight regular season and three playoff games were aired between December and March. While most games took place on Friday nights, some did occur on other evenings, and DJs John Lovering, Jim Alvino, Jason Brown and Daryl Mundo graciously relinquished all or part of their regularly-scheduled show times in order to accommodate special playoff broadcasts.
Charlie Griffin and Sam Bruno handled the play-by-play and Portsmouth High School football coach Brian Pafford and Freshman Boys' basketball coach Bryan Rogers presented the color commentary. Debbie Benedict and Lincoln Soldati were site engineers with Roger Wood as in-studio engineer. Charlie recorded pre-game interviews with Girls' Coach Dan Parr and Boys' Coach Jim Mulvey for each broadcast. At halftime, pre-recorded interviews with members of the basketball, track, hockey and swim teams--together with Portsmouth High School Principal Jeff Collins--were aired on "Meet the Clippers." When a freshman basketball player was diagnosed with leukemia in February, Charlie met with his teammates as they recorded a message of encouragement, which was then played at halftime during one of the games.
Listener response to the broadcasts has been very positive and school department personnel expressed much appreciation and kudos as well.

Under The Radar - Big Band Monday, April 7
|
Since February 2010, your host Steve has been playing the hits, near misses, and any and all types of Big Band music from one of the greatest eras in American music. The first Monday of each month, from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. is Under the Radar--Big Band Mondays.
Monday, April 7, will feature the Boyd Raeburn Orchestra. Boyd Raeburn was never much of a soloist, but his short-lived big band in the mid-'40s featured some of the most advanced arrangements of the time. The group overall was influenced by Count Basie, but they were also the first to record Dizzy Gillespie's "Night in Tunisia"; Dizzy even guested with the band. Such players as Lucky Thompson, Dodo Marmarosa, Ray Linn, and Buddy DeFranco were among the many that passed through the band.
Join Steve in this Boyd Raeburn retrospective and listen to the tidbits for this date in Big Band history. So jump-jive and wail with the Big Bands on the first Monday of each month.
You can connect with the Under the Radar crew via email. And remember, "Steve, loves you madly."
