| Meet Portsmouth Community Radio's "Rock Historian" |
John Walker stepped into our recording studio last April, carrying with him an LP from the rock group, Court of the Crimson King, along with a handwritten script outlining their early history. Over the course of an hour, John recorded his first "Rock History" segment for Portsmouth Community Radio.
First sessions can be rather frustrating for anyone, and John was learning the process of using a mixing board, microphone and computer-based recording software in order to record his text and selected music track into a 10 minute audio file--to be available in a database for all WSCA DJs.
As of this month, John has completed his sixteenth "Rock History" recording session! He's become so proficient with the process that he now records two segments in one session. The latest one features the bands Boston and Talking Heads. Just completing this many recording sessions in itself would be impressive, but John has the added challenge of living with autism in accomplishing this work. First introduced to WSCA in early 2013, John and his mother Ellen had been guests on Don't Dis My Ability, hosted by Ronnie Tomanio, Lee Harvey, and Ali Ketcham (alternate Tuesdays 3:30-4:15 p.m.). Following that broadcast, John Lovering (Don't Dis My Ability engineer) reached out in an effort to capture and put to use Walker's incredible historical knowledge of rock music. Lovering said "We set up a bi-weekly schedule where John comes in to record a segment on the early history of a rock band. He continues to amaze me with the scope of his knowledge as well as his progress in the technical aspects of recording." The recordings are edited by Lovering, then sent along to Supersport (host of Scratch 45s and Beyond, Saturdays 9:00 AM to Noon) where they are uploaded to the radio station's database. This valuable rock history is then made available to all DJs. "It is an extremely useful resource that John Walker contributes to the station."
In addition to his work researching and recording historical segments, Walker is also a regular on Burt Cohen's Fine Aged Rock (Thursdays, 10:00 AM to Noon).

Meet The Hosts of Don't Dis My Ability (Alternate Tuesdays, 3:30-4:15 p.m.)
|
Lee Harvey is a former TMS Architect who loved going to work every day, amused that someone would pay him for the privilege. A devastating stroke while on a cruise with his wife, Kelley, ten years ago, left him looking for alternate ways to fill his time. Co-hosting Don't Dis My Ability has proven to be a great fit.
Lee received his bachelors degree from Ohio State and his masters in architecture from the University of Colorado. He received another masters from the Rochester Institute of Technology in furniture design. He is 65 years young and lives in Kittery, Maine.
 | | Lee Harvey, Pamela Sollenberger and Ronnie Tomanio | Host Ronald Tomanio still works part time for Living Innovations, assisting individuals with various disabilities. Like Lee, he is amused to be paid for what he loves to do. He has an associate degree in electronics technology, but claims he is technologically illiterate when it comes to all things electronics, including the radio show. In his defense, wooden transistors were still in use when Ronnie was in college. At 63, Ronnie is married to Karen (who he affectionately describes as a poor judge of character) the mother to their two daughters and grandmother to three.
The newest co-host is Pamela Sollenberger. With 20 years in the field of grief and loss, serving many populations, she holds a masters of science in counseling psychology from California Lutheran University. Pamela is a certified grief counselor from the American Academy of Grief Counseling--serving as an advisory board member--and the American Academy of Bereavement, as an Advanced Facilitator. Pam is a grief therapist at Krempels Center in Portsmouth and the sole proprietor of The Tapestry of Healing Bereavement Services, LLC, in Exeter. Don't Dis My Abilty welcomes Pamela.
