Hello WSCA Friends,

As you know we held our 2013 Spring Membership Drive from May 3rd through May 9th.  Our goal was to add 200 new or renewing memberships, equaling $20,000. Unfortunately we only attained half of our goal. So, please tell your friends about us, ask them to consider becoming a member. Suggest that they check our website at www.wscafm.org for membership information and to sign up for our Tidings e-newsletter, which is a great way to learn more about WSCA, meet our DJs and volunteers.

We need your help to "spread the word" about Portsmouth Community Radio. We do not want to be the best kept secret in the Seacoast, so it is okay to tell someone about WSCA! Remind them that it is "never too late to donate".

As always, thank you for your financial support and for listening to Portsmouth Community Radio at 106.1 FM locally, streaming live at www.wscafm.org, or on your mobile device using the "Tunein" app.

This Article is a "Reprint" from our May Tidings... We think it is that important:  Problems Finding WSCA On Your Radio? We Need Your Feedback!

Are you having trouble getting clear reception from 106.1FM on your radio at home, work or in your car? Have you noticed a change in WSCA's signal over the past year? Are other radio stations interfering with the signal?

We need to know when and where you are having difficulty listening to WSCA on your radio. When WSCA went on the air in 2004, there was a saying that the gateways to Portsmouth Community Radio were the Hampton, Rochester, and York tolls. These were locations where WSCA's signal started to come in strong driving toward Portsmouth. We've had listener reports from as far away as Nottingham, Kingston and Amesbury. Over the past ten years the radio dial has gotten a bit more crowded and other stations interfering with WSCA's signal appears to be a growing problem. If you have noticed a change in WSCA's signal or other stations interfering with the signal, either in your car, work, or home, let us know. Please email the details (changes, when, where, interfering stations, etc.) to tstone@wscafm.org or call 603-498-0591. The more listener feedback we receive, the greater the chance we can improve WSCA's signal in problem areas. And as always, thanks for listening.

Programming Notes
On Tuesday, May 28th, Don't Dis' My Ability with hosts Ronnie Tomanio, Lee Harvey, and Ali Ketcham was videotaped and posted onDont Dis My Ability TV Show YouTube. Their guest was John Paul Lavelle II, a veteran of the first Iraq, or Gulf War.

It is hoped that allowing listeners to see the visual of a live broadcast will bring even larger audiences to this very popular show. Several of the underwriters of this program have embedded this video into their websites and distributing it to their affiliates. Portsmouth Public Media TV will also be broadcasting the program. The result is more awareness of Portsmouth Community Radio, and that is a very good thing!

Shawn Henderson (Stay Tuned, Fridays 1:30-5:00 PM) and John Lovering (Audio Theatre, Tuesdays 6-8 PM) videotaped the program which was then edited by John Lovering. We invite you to watch the show here.

Tune in to Don't Dis' My Ability every other Tuesday from 3:30-4:15 pm to listen live. The next broadcast is June 25th.  To hear past broadcasts and to learn more about the show, go to Don't Dis My Ability's webpage.

NEW SHOW: The Laugh Factory - Sundays Noon to 1 PM hosted by Chuck Curtis, former host for Send in the Clowns on Portsmouth Community Radio.

Chuck's new show promises less talk, more comedy, and a wider variety of comedians from both the past and present. He invites listeners to send in requests, comments and suggestions, as well as offers for humorous recordings from their own collections for approval and possible on-air play.

Chuck Curtis

Chuck has been a member, a volunteer and an Audio Theatre actor with WSCA for over 5 years. He resides in Exeter, NH with his wife, Julia. They have lived in Exeter for 46 years.

Chuck is grateful to John Lovering, host of Audio Theatre, for introducing him to the station and helping him train for developing his original show, Send in the Clowns. He also added, "I am so happy to get back on the air and once again be a more active member of WSCA working with all the wonderful people who volunteer their time and effort to keep the station alive, well, and entertaining the community."

The Laugh Factory has a very positive philosophy, "Laugh more for better health and well-being. It's like jogging from the inside."

Audio Theatre (Tuesdays, 6-8 PM) To Air Two Locally Produced Shows July 9th

A horror-mystery from the series known as The Night Owl Mystery Theatre is one of the two shows featuring local actors from the Old Time Radio Group that will be heard on July 9th. The play is entitled Rattle-Rattle by James Sedgewick, and features local actors Diane Ficarra, Eddie McGee, Mike Coppinger, Cher McDevitt, and Prudy Taylor. In case you have not guessed, this play involves a rattlesnake...well, sort of...be sure to tune in and find out for sure!

Jane and Goodman Ace - The Easy Aces Our second play is from the hit comedy series known as Easy Aces that entertained radio audiences from 1930 to 1945. The series starred husband and wife team Goodman and Jane Ace.

Goodman plays a hard-working, put upon urban realtor and Jane plays his malaprop-prone wife. In our July 9th play, Jane decides to go to an astrologer, Mr. Bush, who advises her that she should not have married her husband because she and her husband do not have good alignment with the stars!

Meanwhile Mr. Ace's boss, Mr. Norris, has promised him the first raise in salary in several years. However, Mrs. Norris, just back from an astrological visit with Mr. Bush, says it is not the right time to sign any documents including Mr. Ace's raise check! Mrs. Norris thinks, maybe in a few weeks when the stars are in the proper alignment.

Our local actors include: Tania Hall, Stella Ferguson, Stanley Abernathy, Matthew Hollis, Justin Barrow, and John Lovering.  The program was directed and edited by Audio Theatre host, John Lovering.

Radio History
Auto Radiophone appeared in 1919 - Precursor to the Cell Phone
A.H. Grebe Auto-Radiophone
Alfred Grebe, Sr. introduced the Auto Radiophone in the August 1919 issue of Radio Amateur News.

At the age of only 24 Grebe owned his own amateur radio equipment manufacturing company.

He used a 6-wire flat top antenna that was strung across the frame and body of the car. When not in use, the antenna system was slung under the running board on hooks. It seems that portability was "in" even then.

The vacuum tube transmitter and receiver were built into a cabinet with the operating dials on the car's console. A battery hidden behind the seat provided the power to run the tubes. Grebe's Auto Radiophone could receive and transmit within a 150 mile radius!

Grebe noted that the spark from the engine plugs in nearby cars caused a lot of static interference as they passed by. This was his biggest complaint.

In concluding his article, Grebe said, "It is safe to say that his tests showed that "the Auto Radiophone is entirely practical, and the near future should bring extensive developments along these lines, and we may soon hear an SOS: 'Send an emergency service car to car No. 999-999 three miles east of Suburbanville.' "

He was off on only two counts -- SOS has become simply 911 and "soon" came much later than he had predicted. Citizens band transceivers became popular in the 1970s, but not until the 1990s did "Auto Radiophones" (aka Cell Phones) become commonplace.
A.H. Grebe was, indeed, a man ahead of his time and played a vital part in the history of the radio.
