Turnip the Beet for Sustainability - Green Living Fair and Concert!

On Saturday, May 4th, to help celebrate our Seed The Power membership drive, WSCA presents a family-friendly concert and green living fair at the beautiful new Star Theatre located in the Kittery Community Center, 120 Rogers Road, Kittery.

Doors open at 6PM for the Green Living Fair, with local organizations showing the value of living a greener, healthier and more environmentally-sustainable lifestyle. We are very excited to have the following organizations exhibiting at the fair:  Greater Seacoast Permaculture Group, Seacoast Eat Local, Slow Food Seacoast, Post-Landfill Action Network, Green Alliance, Seacoast NH 350.org, Port City Makerspace, Green Art, Kittery Land Trust, Piscataqua Region Estuary Partnership (PREP), Cape Neddick Center for Wildlife,  Awareness Unlimited, End 68 Hours of Hunger, Kittery Adult Education, PPMTV, Healing Hands Community Chiropractic, Green Maids, and ECOmovement. Learn more about permaculture with WSCA's Amy Antonucci and Steve Diamond (video by John Lovering), parts 1 and 2.

The music starts at 7pm with local favorite and rising star Andrea Szirbik + the Bearded [4].  Headliner Australian Charlie Mgee, takes the stage next, coming up from down under with his infectious music, rhyme and humor to spread the seeds of sustain-ability. The Permaculture Troubadour plays a mean ukulele, with original music that is sure to serenade, amuse and inform. You'll learn how to save the planet while you dance.  And here's a message from Charlie Mgee!

We want to thank our underwriters who make this event possible: The Star Theatre of the Kittery Community Center, Greater Seacoast Permaculture Group, Cornerstone Tree Care, ECOMovement, Green Maids, Green Art, and Rolling Green Nursery.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and kids under 12 are free but must reserve with a ticket. For more information check our website or call the station at 603-430-9722. Tickets are available on-line at or at WSCA (walk in only) at 909 Islington Street, Suite 1, Portsmouth, NH

All funds raised during the concert and the 7-day drive will support the programming of WSCA. WSCA celebrates its more than eight years on-air, offering a wide range of independent music, local and global news, and community information, all thanks to the enthusiastic support of its members and dedicated volunteers. WSCA Sponsors Blood Drive

As part of our membership drive, Portsmouth Community Radio is sponsoring an American Red Cross blood drive on Friday, May 3 from noon to 5PM at the Middle Street Baptist Church, 18 Court Street, Portsmouth, NH.

The need for blood is constant. According to the Red Cross, every year more than 4 million people donate about 6.5 million pints of blood to help save lives. Eligible blood donors are strongly encouraged to schedule an appointment for May 3rd by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or by visiting   www.redcrossblood.org.

"WSCA is excited to be a part of the blood drive," said Rick Pickford, WSCA board president. "The bombings at the Boston Marathon really drive home the need to step up and help. One donation, which takes about an hour of your time, can help save the lives of up to three people.  I can't think of any bigger return for so little time and effort."

All donors will receive a cool gift from WSCA, discounted rates for new WSCA memberships and coupon for a free quart of Stonyfield organic yogurt redeemable at any Hannaford location in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Local Folk with host Steve Carrigan

Since Christmas 2011, Steve Carrigan has been airing his Local Folk show every Monday evening from 7-8 to a growing fan base. This is a talk show about music and although there is nearly always music during the show, the focus is the conversation between Steve and his guests. Whether the guest is an author, musician on tour, doing session work or just making music at home, the conversations draw out what pulled the guest down that particular musical path.

"After Elizabeth's (Steve's wife) stroke, we had a large supportive community of people around us, people we'd played music with.  Eventually I realized that I had a close relationship with many of them through playing music, but really didn't know much about some of them or their musical background. This show is a opportunity to learn more about my guests and it's also an opportunity to try to inspire listeners to take action in music, whether through playing, active listening, or going out to see live music."

Steve's guests are local folk who come from varied styles of music, mostly folk, celtic, bluegrass, and singer-songwriter.  Steve was quick to point out that he's not limited to particular genres of music, it's the passion, the conversation that he seeks out. For those of us who love music, listening to musicians talk about music is endlessly fascinating.  And this show is.  If you can't wait for Monday night's broadcast, you can access Steve's past shows at his website.
