Hello WSCA Friends,

Welcome to the beautiful, fresh look of Tidings! A huge thanks to Rick Pickford, our President of the Board of Trustees, for creating this new look which echos the look he designed for our website.

Lots of programming to mention and things happening at the station, so without further ado . . . .

L.J. Delta wins big at NACMAI awards show in Tennessee!
Last Sunday at The North American Country Music Association 2013 Awards Show our own L. J. Delta (aka Larry Newman) was presented with songwriting awards for the #1 Country Holiday Song ("L.J.'s Christmas Song") and the #2 Traditional Country Song ("The Anniversary Song").  Larry is holding both awards at the show in the photo.  Larry is very grateful to his friends from the Downeast Country Music Association for giving him the opportunity to play in Tennessee.

Tune in to L.J's The High Lonesome Sound every Sunday from 3-5 PM for traditional and outlaw country music - LJ's a guy who really knows his music - so be sure to check his show out.

Volunteer of the Month - Anita Croteau!

We've gone too long without regular monthly volunteer recognition and it's fitting that Anita lead the renewal of this feature!

Anita has been at WSCA since the beginning, having debuted This and That with Anita in November of 2004 - just two months after WSCA first went on the air.   In 2011, Anita joined Jean Proulx as co-host of Station Talk, heard Thursdays from 1-1:30 PM.

Over the past 8 1/2 years, Anita has proven to be one of our most dedicated volunteers.  The number of events at which she has volunteered her time are countless.   She has also given just as much time to the station's volunteer office staff, lending support on several administrative projects--even taking work home to get it done not just on-time, but usually ahead of schedule.  Did everyone notice how great the program hosts' mailboxes look - finally in order?  That's just another one of Anita's projects.

Anita's (admittedly twisted) sense of humor, great smile, quick wit, kind and friendly nature has endeared her to us all!

18th Annual Spotlight Awards

The 18th annual Spotlight Awards are happening on Thursday, April 18th.  This is when the Seacoast makes its choices for best local actor, musician, play, artist, chef and it all takes place at the Music Hall.  Besides handing out awards, the evening is scheduled with performances of some of our best local talent.  It's always a good time.  Doors open at 6 PM for a WSCA pre-party. The show kicks off at 7 PM.  If you can't get there, don't despair - WSCA will be broadcasting live!

Plans are in the works for the Spring Pledge Drive and the team is already plotting how to make this the best drive yet!  The drive will run from Friday, May 3rd through Thursday, May 9th and Jean Proulx will again be heading up the drive  The pledge drive is a time when the volunteers converge at the studio, all week long, to help out and catch up with the other volunteers they don't often see. It's a fun and social time. And we are ALWAYS looking for help before, during, and after the drive.

Personnel Changes at the Station

Nikki Keefe of the Navigator Mix Show, Wednesdays from 1-3 PM has joined the programming committee.  Nikki is very excited about this new learning experience and looks forward to her new role here at the station.  Thank you, Nikki!

Julie Pridham joined the station earlier this month and that makes her our newest volunteer.  She's working in the office, learning our database and membership department needs, under the guidance and tutelage of Steve Diamond and Meg Middleton.  Welcome, Julie!

Ann Haggart is wrapping up her one-year commitment to lead the underwriting department.   A few of her highlights in her underwriting work were contracting with NH DOT for messages regarding traffic detours during demolition and construction of the Memorial Bridge and special underwriting support for live remote broadcasts of PHS football and basketball games.

Several program hosts have helped out: Burt Cohen, Nancy Beach of Atlantic Media, and Gary Dolan renewed their sponsorships of their shows and others passed along leads. But Ron Tomanio takes the prize--- garnering four sponsors for Don't Dis My Ability -- bringing in $1,000!

Ann's biggest coup for in-kind support has been a year-long contract with COAST -- we provide the messages and 14 COAST buses contain an advertising placard for Portsmouth Community Radio, along with our QR code, so that anyone with a phone can scan it and "listen live".

Ann has also taken on much of the communications for the station over the last year. Both Spotlight and the Wire provide us with in-kind ad space each week which Ann consistently delivered on. She reports having to swallow hard when Tim Stone asked her "Who's doing those goofy ads?"

Ann is staying on in her position of Director of News and Public Affairs -- which means that she is also on the GMG and Programming Committee. Be sure to thank Ann for all her hard work.

And yes, we are looking for folks interested in filling Ann's shoes to work in underwriting and communications.  If you enjoy sales and writing and would like to make a big difference to the station, this position is for you! Contact Jean Proulx.

On Wednesday, March 20th our WSCA Audio Theatre Players recorded a radio play that was originally presented on the Columbia Workshop in 1938.  It is entitled "Seven Waves Away" and is very different from anything we have done before in that it is a very serious drama.

Diane Ficarra at the mike

The play involves a lifeboat with 23 passengers some two-hundred miles in the middle of the North Atlantic and caught in a vicious storm.  The problem is that the lifeboat's capacity is 18 passengers and the First Mate is forced to make life and death decisions that will lead to some of the most dramatic scenes ever heard in a radio play.

Our cast includes: Jack Tracksler, Eddie McGee, Mike Coppinger, Steve Shervanian, Shawn Henderson, Jessie Rains, Chuck Curtis, Richard Jenisch, and Diane Ficarra (see photo).
The show is produced, edited, and directed by Audio Theatre (Tuesdays, 6-8 PM) host, John Lovering.  The tentative air date is April 2nd, so be sure to check our website or go to our Portsmouth Community Radio Facebook page for details.

Seniors' (Radio) Magazine, Thursdays at 6 AM weekly, now features The 6:30 Segment.  The first Thursday of every month, Kelly Kingsbury Roskilly will be in the studio to discuss financial planning.  Attorney Susan Denenberg will be joining Finn every second Thursday.  The third Thursday, Joanne Burke from the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, UNH will be in the studio.  And the fourth Thursday is the City of Portsmouth Seniors Coordinator Brinn Chute and from the Portsmouth Public Library, Director Mary Ann List.

Host Finn Connell, explains the motivation behind these special segments.  "I was doing a regular 6:30 segment about nutrition, diet and the occasional recipe.  My 'healthy eating' expert became unavailable, but our listeners had really enjoyed The 6:30 Segment with a regular guest. It was very popular. That was the catalyst for starting other, regular topics."

For information on future shows, a timely blog, and all past shows, you can visit the Seniors' (Radio) Magazine website. Be sure to tune in - this show isn't just for seniors!
