February 21, 2013

Hello, WSCA Friends,

As we approach the weekend with another storm predicted, let's keep our minds on Spring! Witch-hazel bushes are in full bloom right now, bulbs are pushing through the soil near foundation walls, and some of the birds have changed to their late winter/spring calls. Warmer weather is coming and that means potluck cookouts at the station! Stay tuned . . .

Portsmouth Science Cafe

The Portsmouth Science Café is back with a new spring series taking place in the Jimmy LaPanza Lounge at the Portsmouth Brewery, 56 Market Street, Portsmouth.

The Seacoast Science Café provides a unique opportunity for researchers to talk with Seacoast residents about the science that directly impacts our lives. The casual environment encourages people to join the conversation, even if they don't know much about the topic right away. Everyone is welcome, and no tickets or reservations are necessary. The Café series is co-sponsored by University of New Hampshire and EPSCoR, New Hampshire's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research. Portsmouth Community Radio, WSCA 106.1 FM, will record each event for replay on the radio, as well as via podcast.

Upcoming Science Cafes include (please note that the live events are at 6PM and the broadcast on WSCA is at 9AM):

March 6:  Sustainable Communities, Public Health, and Transportation: Connecting the Dots; broadcast is March 19

April 10:  Going Underground--How the Soil Beneath our Feet Affects Climate; broadcast is April 23

May 8:  Warmer Water, Riskier Coasts: How Climate Change is Affecting Shellfish and Recreation, broadcast is May 21

May 15:  The Science of Beer, broadcast is May 28

Podcasts are archived on the web hereNH EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) is a program funded by the National Science Foundation to increase research capacity in the state. Its current project, "Ecosystems and Society," seeks to better understand the complex interactions between ecosystems, land use and climate, as well as to provide essential information for state decision makers.

The Portsmouth Brewery is New Hampshire's original brewpub and the University of New Hampshire, founded in 1866, is a world-class public research university, a land, sea, and space-grant university. For further questions or to be added to a mailing list regarding future events and broadcasts, contact: Evelyn Jones NH EPSCoR at (603) 862-1804 or Evelyn.Jones@unh.edu or JT Thompson of the Portsmouth Brewery at jt@smuttynose.com.

A Blast at the WSCA Fundraiser Dance

Had a great time at the WSCA dance last month with the Jeanie Daniels Band.  As always, the VFW was packed and rocking from the first song to the last.  Big thanks to the band and all the volunteers who made the event so successful.

News from the Engineering Department

The WSCA engineering department is proud to report two important upgrades to Control Room-B, which is used primarily for program pre-production, but which has full ability for on-air use.

Engineering has added a third CD deck, which is capable not only of

Ta-da!

standard and MP3 CD playback, but also has a USB port which can accommodate playback from a thumb drive or a powered hard drive.

Second, after a lot of hard work by Rocky (aka: Peter C. R. Smith), CR-B now has a working phone-patch. This means that program hosts can now interview guests by phone. We've had that ability in our primary control room (CR-A) for years now, but we are very pleased to have added it to the station's program pre-production toolkit.

Seacoast Family Food Pantry

The Seacoast Family Food Pantry is near and dear to many hearts here in the Seacoast.  They have their 4th Annual Frugal Feast coming up on March 9th, more information here.

I just learned that our WSCA holiday gathering back in December at the Portsmouth Brewery brought in donations of 110 pounds of food which was then donated to this very worthy organization in time for the holidays.

Programming Notes

Charlie Griffin will be subbing for Ann as host of Radiogazette on Friday morning from  9-10AM and will be talking about the Oscars. He'll be talking with film critics Leah Gage and Derek Hintz about which film they think will win, which film should win, and which films weren't nominated but should have been. And he'll play a medley of nominations for Best Original Song. Thanks for getting us ready for Sunday's Oscars!

Every 3 weeks the Eggman does a series of shows he calls the "Alphabetical Series". Whatever letter he randomly draws is the starting letter for all the bands and artists in his collection (from the 50's, 60's & 70's only) that he'll be playing that night.  Friday the letter is "P".  Tune in to see what songs get airplay on The Metaphysical Circus, Friday night at 10PM.

Live every Friday night at 10PM to 1AM EST!

Grab your morning coffee on Saturday and tune into "Scratchy 45s & Beyond".   The Supersport will be bringing in a special guest who rebuilds jukeboxes and video games AND is a collector of rare "scratchy 45's".  Somehow, we think these two will have a lot to talk about!  Join John and "The Supersport"  this Saturday for a "rare" show of tunes, 9AM to Noon.

Sydney Blair will be joining Darryl Mundo on The Groove this Saturday (2/23/13) from 6-8PM.   Blair will be sharing her wisdom and thoughts about life. The music selection will be pop, featuring some of Sydney's favorites: Pink, Black Eyed Peas, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson and a whole more.  Did we mention Sydney is 7 years old?!

One thing is certain....lots of fun will be had....don't miss it....The Groove Saturday 6-8PM.

If you haven't heard Don't Dis My Ability which airs alternate Tuesdays from 3:30-4:15PM, you are missing out on some great radio.  The show is about living with disabilities . . . it is poignant, eye-opening, and sometimes very funny.  Living Innovations, one of the show's underwriters, has devoted a page of their website to the program so you can listen to past shows and learn more about this terrific project.

The Portsmouth High School Girls Basketball Tournament begins on Tuesday February 26th at 7 pm.   The game will be broadcast live on Portsmouth Community Radio beginning at 6:45PM.  Your in-studio host will be Charlie Griffin.  Play by Play with Andrew Van Ness.

Any business interested in underwriting our live broadcasts of Portsmouth High School Basketball should contact underwriting@ wscafm.org.

Jean Proulx always has interesting guests on her show for Pawsitive Thoughts, airing on Thursdays from 2-3PM.  Case in point . . .

Steve Kowal meets an owl from York's Center for Wildlife.

________________________________________________________

The show is called Under the Radar and it's on every Monday from 8-10:00PM.  Next Monday, Jenny will be in the studio with her Soul Edition of UTR.  She'll be taking you to Philadelphia for the heyday of the sweet Philly Sound, the '70's.

On Monday, March 4th , Steve will be airing his annual tribute to the Chairman of the Board, playing Frank Sinatra's own original recordings as well as covers of songs made great by his contemporaries.  Frank may only be a solo artist but he brings to the forefront the attitude of swing and Big Band music that only a Big Band era vocalist can do.

Listen to 'Under the Radar" with Jean or Jenny for 3 weeks of each month, and when the first Monday of the month comes around, tune into the Seacoast's only true Big Band show with Steve.
