Are you interested in getting involved as a radio show host or volunteer at Portsmouth Community Radio? Do you have an interest in news, radio engineering, live music performance engineering, music show production, or public affairs programming? WSCA also has many opportunities for volunteers in off-air roles including marketing, fundraising, administration, IT, social media, and music acquisition, review and management. The first step to getting involved with WSCA is to attend a two-hour Module 1 - Station Introduction training session.
The next Module 1 training session is scheduled for Monday, January 21st, 6:00 - 8:00PM. After completion of the Module 1 training, you will be ready to volunteer for many of the off-air and behind-the-scenes roles at the station. You can also continue on with further training modules as required if you are interested in being an on-air show host or helping out with other more technical roles at the station.
All training sessions will be held at WSCA's 909 Islington Street studios. Please pre-register for a training session by clicking on email, or calling 603-430-9722 and leaving a message for training. February is almost here . . . the time of year when folks around the globe record an album in 28 days. The countdown to RPM 2013 begins in 10 short days. And yep, this tradition started right here in Portsmouth in 2006 by The Wire.
Last year WSCA engineers Gordon Sharpless and Jean Gagne helped Keith and

Gordon with Keith and Kathy.
|
Kathy Sheehan of Kin'rede Spirits with the technical aspects of recording and producing a CD. Gordon and Jean reported that it was a blast. Kathy said it was a wonderful experience and a healing one, coming shortly after the death of her mother. This was Kathy's first RPM Challenge and it has rekindled her passion. She and Keith will be back at WSCA this year with Gordon and Jean to record another album.
Are you a musician in need of technical help? Are you a WSCA DJ/engineer capable of handling the technical side of recording an album? Gordon is making available email addresses of interested people - cont act Gordon to be included in that list so you can contact the other folks to figure out who has what skills, then create your team. Gordon and Jean will be involved in engineering the Sheehan's album so cannot be part of your team, but can provide some technical assistance you. If needed, you can record at station in CR-B or in CR-A during Otis time . . . or anywhere!
S o sign up to get started - stop procrastinating, get creative, and make this the most memorable February of your life!

Portsmouth High School Basketball Broadcast Live
|
On the heels of overwhelming success in broadcasting Portsmouth High School football live on WSCA 106.1 FM this past fall, Portsmouth Community Radio is now broadcasting boys and girls basketball this winter season.
The pre-game show kicks off at 6:15 p.m. with interviews with coaches Jim Mulvey (boys) and Dan Parr (girls) with a game time
 | | Front row L-R: Roger Wood, Charlie Griffin; back row L-R: Debbie Benedict, Michael Peters, Andrew Van Ness |
of 6:30 p.m. The halftime show on WSCA 106.1 FM will consist of interviews with other Portsmouth High School winter sports coaches as well as Seacoast sports personalities such as longtime sportscaster and public announcer Duane Frank. Charlie Griffin is the host of both the pre-game and half time shows. Andrew Van Ness, who did the play-by-play during broadcasts of PHS football this past fall, will do the same for this winter's home basketball games.
WSCA will broadcast a total of six home games: the boys' team vs. St. Thomas was aired on Jan. 11 and Hollis-Brookline was aired on Jan. 18. Going forward, Kingswood on Feb. 1 and Kennett on Feb. 15; and girls' team vs. Souhegan on Feb. 2 and against Windham on Feb. 8. The games will be available both via radio at 106.1 FM as well as live streaming on www.wscafm.org. Griffin said one nice aspect of listening to the Clipper games on the radio is when weather is a factor, fans can stay dry and warm at home listening to the play-by-play.
"If you can't come to the game live, this is the next best thing," said Athletic Director Rus Wilson. "We have heard numerous anecdotes as to how convenient it is to have the games on the radio. Plus the announcers are great and it is the next best thing to being at the game live."
