Portsmouth Community Radio to Hold Holiday Gathering
| |
Members, volunteers, supporters, underwriters, and friends of Portsmouth Community Radio are invited to attend the station's Annual Holiday Gathering on Wednesday, December 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Portsmouth Brewery on Market Street in downtown Portsmouth. Take time out during the holidays and share some good food, beverage, and holiday cheer with the folks who bring you the locally produced programming on Portsmouth Community Radio.
Looking for a holiday gift? Portsmouth Community Radio gift memberships, t-shirts, mugs, and bumper stickers will be available at the event. We will also be collecting non-perishable food items at the gathering to be donated to the Seacoast Family Food Pantry, so please bring one or more items to help out this very worthwhile community organization.
Mark you calendars and join Portsmouth Community Radio for some holiday cheer on Wednesday, December 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Portsmouth Brewery. We hope to see you there!

EPSCor, Portsmouth Brewery, and WSCA form collaboration
| |
A year ago Ann Haggart, Portsmouth Community Radio's Director of News and Public Affairs, noticed that several University of New Hampshire professors where starting a "Science Cafe" at a local restaurant in Concord. Thinking that this might make for good programming, Ann spoke to Damon Thomas, Programming Director, about recording the event and broadcasting it. Damon agreed that this would be a good thing to pursue.
As things happen, Ann never made it to Concord to record the event, but late this summer she noted that the Science Cafe was coming to The Portsmouth Brewery. Ann connected with longtime station supporter Peter Egleston, the brewery's proprietor, who agreed to let the four events be taped and to be the site sponsor for the station.

The Science Cafe is supported by a National Science Foundation program at UNH called EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research). EPSCoR started the seacoast version of the Science Cafe in order to bring scientists out of the university and into the community to share their knowledge and respond to audience questions. UNH professor Cameron Wake and Communications and Information Manager Evelyn Jones jumped right in to support the broadcast, of which EPSCor is an underwriter. So, once a month Ann goes to the Science Cafe at The Portsmouth Brewery and records that evening's topic, and Tim Stone broadcasts it on The Environmental Show (Tuesdays, 9-10 a.m.). Then, Evelyn turns it into a podcast and posts it on the EPSCoR website. The final Science Cafe of this season is about the Great Bay Estuary. Join in the discussion on Wednesday, December 5, at 6 p.m. at The Portsmouth Brewery, or listen to the broadcast Tuesday, December 18 at 9 a.m. on Portsmouth Community Radio.

Seacoast Science Cafes Air on The Environmental Show
The University of New Hampshire and New Hampshire EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research), in collaboration with The Portsmouth Brewery, have been presenting a series of Seacoast Science Cafes at the brewery (see story above). The Seacoast Science Cafe brings the coastal community face-to-face with researchers to engage in dialogue about the latest scientific discoveries on the interactions between ecosystems and society. The final two Science Cafes will be broadcast on The Environmental Show (Tuesdays, 9-10 a.m.) on December 4 and 18.
The December 4 program will be "Forest Ecosystems and the Winds of Change: The History and Future of Forests as a Cog in the Earth System," presented by Scott Ollinger, a professor with the Earth Systems Research Center and the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment.
The December 5 program will be "The Health of Great Bay: Great Big Challenges and Great Big Opportunities," presented by Rachel Rouillard and Cory Riley. Rouillard is the director of the Piscataqua Region Estuaries Partnership, and Riley is the manager of the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.
If you can't listen to The Environmental Show on Tuesday mornings, you can listen to the online archive of the programs at your leisure at wscafm.org.

Under the Radar: Big Band Monday to Air December 3
Tune in to Portsmouth Community Radio on Monday, December 3, from 8 to 10 p.m., for the Seacoast's only big band show, Under the Radar: Big Band Monday, with host Steve Shervanian.
The December 3 show will be a very special one, as you'll get a triple play from the Under the Radar crew. Not only will Steve be on the air with his big band sounds, but his co-hosts will be the rest of the Under the Radar gang. Rounding out this triple play will be Jenny Freeman, who will bring along some "soul vaccination," and Jean Gagne, he of the sultry voice and the softer side of rock'n roll. The crew will be playing holiday songs and songs about money. Why money? Well, because it's the Under the Radar Pledge Drive show, with giveaways, special music for the occasion, some fun conversation, and who knows what else, all to celebrate Portsmouth Community Radio's eight years on the local airwaves and as a major part of our Pledge Drive.
So jump, jive, and wail with the big bands the first Monday of each month from 8 to 10 p.m. And don't forget to circle the date of December 3 for the special Pledge Drive edition of Under the Radar: Big Band Monday!
You can follow the whole Under the Radar crew on Facebook at www.facebook.com/UnderTheRadarPortsmouthCommunityRadio.
