Bonefish Bar & Grill Events

I'd also like to start Bonefish's section by thanking them, because they were just as important to the success of the Billfish Release Cup's Final Registration Party! Traditionally Bonefish hosts the Registration Party and the Awards Party for this event, but even though the location was different this year, they still provided fabulous food for the event - with a BBQ style dinner cooked right at Fun Golf on their Sunset Terrace. Tonight is the awards dinner at Bonefish, and we know it will be wonderful again this time round!

As mentioned in the previous newsletters, Bonefish will have the following happening this season!

Entertainment 7 days a week!

Salsa Mania on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Randy Lambert will be playing Spanish guitar on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday afternoons.

Andrew Chamberlain "the Reggae Calypso King" will be playing on Thursday evenings.

And Saturdays  the "Mixed Bag Trio " will be playing.

Bonefish will also be showing all major sporting events.

Bermuda Billfish Release Cup

The Bermuda Billfish Release Cup, AKA Billfish Blast is the first part of the Bermuda Triple Crown Championship which is an annual fishing tournament. The Billfish Blast is held in aid of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation scholarship.  This scholarship helps young Bermudians to establish careers in the Maritime Industry. This year 21 year old  Kristen Greene, a graduate of the programme and a scholarship recipient who happens to be on the Island at the moment, attended the Awards Dinner yesterday to speak of his experiences and how this scholarship has impacted his life.  Diana Martin from the Bermuda Sloop Foundation had the following to say,  "He's a wonderful young man and a shining example of how Bermuda's youth benefit from the Spirit of Bermuda education and character development programme and the opportunities for further education/scholarships.  Kristen has graduated from Warsash Maritime Academy in the UK, and just finished a shipboard assignment as 3rd Officer at age 21.   He and we should all be proud of what he has accomplished!!" I'd like to thank the Bermuda Billfish Release Cup staff, participants and all of the businesses/hotels who donated items towards this year's silent auction also held last night at the awards dinner, without you these opportunities would not be available to our young Bermudians.

As mentioned in the Fun Golf and Bonefish sections, the Final Registration Party was held at Bermuda Fun Golf and Catered by Bonefish Bar and Grill. In addition the Bermuda Sloop Foundation provided a charter over from Hamilton to Dockyard for the participants which everyone seemed to enjoy .  Below are some photos from the evening, including the winners of the Mini Golf Tournament. And last but not least, we have included the Final Team Standing and photo of this year's Billfish Blast Wining Team!

Step Into History!

Dockyard remained an important strategic base for a further 139 years. During the First World War (1914-18) and Second World War (1939-1945), it was a bustling, vibrant port with floating docks where ships were repaired for combat deployment. Nearly 600 vessels were repaired and put back into action. In addition, sea patrols from here escorted people from and to the UK and Canada, and German soldiers passed through Dockyard on their way to POW camps in Canada.

Also, antisubmarine training was undertaken in the Dockyard area. In more recent years, NATO vessels have stopped at Dockyard for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. A wall to the south of the Clocktower is decorated with ships' crests, recording vessels that have called at Dockyard's wharf. Notable amongst the crests is one painted by HRH Prince Charles on a visit to Bermuda in 1977. The Royal Navy left the main Dockyard in 1951 although the naval base was not officially closed until 1995. For the next two decades the area was largely abandoned until the Bermuda Maritime Museum was officially opened in the fortress known as the Keep and its success led government to begin to restore the Dockyard as a cultural tourism destination.

In 1982, Bermuda passed the West End Development Corporation (WEDCO) act and more than $60 million was pumped into Dockyard, transforming the once-unused edifice into one of the islands' biggest tourist attractions. Today Dockyard is the most visited site in Bermuda, underscoring the value of architectural heritage to the tourism industry, and the Maritime Museum provides a fascinating journey through Bermuda's often-turbulent history, from shipwrecks and whaling to the first flying boats and modern tourism.
