Transforming Education Through Technology & Innovation
The ratio of IT staff members to the number of computers in most CT schools is much lower than what is found in the corporate world. Desktop computer performance erodes faster than school systems can afford to replace, and IT professionals find themselves trapped in the endless cycle of repair, replace, repeat. This consumes most of their time and prevents them from doing what schools really need for 21st century learning; integrating technology further and further into the curriculum.
But the time for change has arrived. The Walker Group and 3 other CT Technology companies have joined forces to form The CT Technology & Education Collaborative. Together, we have developed an innovative approach using virtualization technology to turn "old" computers, that companies are retiring, into high-performance virtual desktops. This solution leverages the philanthropic efforts of area companies to give a meaningful 2nd life to donated computers in a way that has previously not been possible.
The consortium combines decades of experience in areas that are crucial to making this model successful.
The Walker Group, (Farmington, CT) a provider of IT infrastructure support, network management services and IT security services.
GreenShare Technology, (Farmington, CT) a non-profit specializing in computer refurbishment for schools, non-profits & other organizations in need.
SpaceFitters, (Windsor, CT) a specialty logistics company with an on-site computer recycling operation and years of experience recycling, refurbishing and warehousing IT equipment for area corporations.
CT Center For Advanced Technology, (East Hartford, CT) a non-profit that helps schools improve efficiencies in their day-to-day operations through the use of innovative technology, such as hosting virtual desktops and making them available over the CT Education Network. This collaborative effort will be an avenue for social change as corporations get more involved by donating equipment that is specially re-purposed to give students better access to the technology they need for gaining a quality education and being properly prepared to join the knowledge workforce. To learn more about the program, early pilot successes, and how this initiative will unfold in the upcoming months, please contact: Joe McGrattan, The Walker Group
