Get Your Pride On with 'Great Things to Know About Rutgers'


Want some great conversation starters at your next summertime barbecue? Read all Great Things brochure about significant accomplishments in Rutgers' history in the new "Great Things to Know About Rutgers" brochure. A compendium of briefs on significant people, places, and things around the university, the 20-page booklet is sprinkled with fantastic fast facts related to the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences and the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station.



For example, read about the ocean exploration of underwater gliders deployed by our own Center for Ocean Observing Leadership, the phytoremediation of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site pioneered by faculty member Ilya Raskin, the discovery of antibiotics by alumnus, professor, and Nobel Prize-winner Selman Waksman, and much more. A PDF version and a "page-turner" version of the publication are posted online for you to peruse.

Speaking of Great, See You at the Great Tomato Tasting



2012 GTT - Rutgers Chef Circle Wednesday, August 31, 2016, on your calendar and plan to visit the annual Great Tomato Tasting at Snyder Research and Extension Farm in Pittstown, NJ. The open house begins at 3 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m. Visitors will have more than 80 heirloom and hybrid tomatoes to sample, from beefsteaks to plum, cherry, and grape varieties. Also available for tasting are other produce and honey from the farm.



Additional activities will include a chef's cooking demonstration and tasting put on by Rutgers Dining Services, guided educational wagon tours of the farm's research plots, visits to the farm's gardens with opportunities to ask questions and get answers, insect displays, information booths on various foods grown in the Garden State, and many other displays of interest. Alumni on Location: New Jersey Wines and Vines


Come to the renowned Unionville Vineyards in Ringoes, NJ, for an afternoon of touring, Unionville wines tasting, and tidbits from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2016. John Cifelli (CC'10), general manager of Unionville Vineyards, will host Rutgers alumni and lead a tour of the winery.



Faculty member Gary Pavlis (AG'73, GSNB'85), Atlantic County Agriculture and Resource Management Agent, will discuss winemaking, New Jersey wines and the wine-growing regions, and how New Jersey wines are competing against some of the finest French wines. Guests will be treated to a glass of wine upon arrival. The tasting will include six wines, accompanied by fruit, cheeses, and antipasto trays. The cost is $20 for adults. Celebrate Rutgers Gardens 100th Anniversary



Readers of Explorations, the School's magazine for alumni and friends, learned all about the fascinating history and future plans of Rutgers Gardens thanks to a cover 100th anniversary logo story on the 100th anniversary celebration of the Gardens this year. A quiet haven off Ryders Lane near the George H. Cook Campus, the grounds are open year-round and the facility charges no admission fee.



Programs, special events, educational classes, and hands-on demonstrations take place on almost a daily basis. Rutgers Gardens is a favorite place for weddings and reunions, for picture-taking, and for quiet getaways. Rutgers Gardens is planning a dynamic future: director Bruce Crawford and his staff are working on a master plan that will take visitors on a journey through time and nature. All are welcome to be a part of the future of Rutgers Gardens; membership programs and volunteer opportunities abound.
